SAHM's - do you send kids to camp?
Dd is 5 and this is the first summer any of her friends are doing camp and the ones that are are doing a few weeks or two days a week. My siblings and I did camp one year growing up and the rest of the time we stayed home. We grew up on a dead end and spent all summer outside riding bikes and hopping from yard to yard playing with all the neighbors.

I never went to camp and also did this growing up... but unfortunately times have changed and most children have both parents that work FT so they're not around all summer.
Not to mention we somehow managed to buy a house where the nearest child is 5 blocks away

They have never gone to camp because I love having them with me. They are going for 2 weeks this summer for the first time to give me a little break since I have a new baby. I really hope they enjoy it.

I'm not a SAHM but a teacher so I'm off the summer. I will not be sending my toddler to camp because I already pay enough for daycare throughout the year and don't want to spend more. We do fun activities everyday and are never bored. I never went to camp so maybe that's why I don't care about it too much. When he is older and asks maybe he can go part time but I'm not spending a ton of money on camp when I'm off.

I'm a teacher, so I'm home for the summer...my kids are 10, 8, and 4...we don't do camp, mainly because they don't want to. My girls dance throughout the summer, go to acting classes, and are doing a week long workshop for Broadway prep, but no traditional camp. I like the freedom of picking up and going to the beach, Splish Splash, or Manhattan for the day. I am so scheduled all school year that this is my little bit of freedom to just go with the flow of the day. If they really wanted it, I'd let them go, but since no one bites when I ask, we keep doing what we usually do.

Yep - my almost 7 year old will go to Summer Recreation. It's a 5 week program from 9-3 that is run at his school by our school district. It's up to us to decide when he wants to go. I sign him up for the full 5 weeks, but he doesn't have to show up every day, I can pick him up for lunch and not go back for the afternoon, or he can stay all day and have lunch with his friends. They go on trips every week and have lots of activities. I like to send him so that he has a break from hanging out with me all the time and he can keep up his friendships that he's made over the school year and make new friends too.

I'm a teacher so sahm in the summer. DS will go to camp for 4 weeks total (2 different camps) and DD will go to the sitter once a week.
It will keep them busy (I am not the best planner to do activities).
It will keep them in a routine while allowing us flexibility other weeks.
I will get ME time for a few weeks. I need that.

Yes. Both my boys will go to camp. It's a few days a week for 7 weeks and one week in the end my 8 year old will go to basketball camp. I am NOT from LI and I went to camp and sleepaway camp. It is a wonderful and fun experience that I am so greatful I got to enjoy and we are lucky to afford to send our boys to camp. Right now it's day camp. Not sure about sleepaway, but we'll see in the future.
They stay busy, swim twice a day, do fun outside activities, art, trips, make lots of friends, etc.
I do work PT from home so it is hard to keep them busy in the summer. We go to Great Adventure, hang by the pool and take some day trips, but I think camp is a whole different experience that can do with kids their age and with fun counselors. I could never keep them that entertained and would cost me way more. LOL

Sleepaway camp is totally a Long Island thing. No one I knew in Iowa went to sleepaway camp and rarely say camp. It's pretty rare in Massachusetts too. The Costs for camp are crazy. Growing up In Long Island My mother was home all summer ( teacher) and as s kid I went to all day day camp than sleepaway camp. Honestly I think she preferred her time without me there haha. I was always jealous of the kids that spent their summers with their family so I try to do that now with my own kids
I'm from NJ and went to sleepaway camp and actually met friends from all over the East Coast. My roommate is from Mass and went to sleepaway camp too. I do think it may be more of an east coast thing, but I loved the experience. I had so many great memories at sleepaway. Being a kid and getting to sleep in a bunk with friends, swimming, boating on a lake, field day, color war, trips, etc. IT's not for everyone though. My parents also worked full time.

My friend from Virginia just sent her 7 1/2 year old to sleepaway camp this week so it's not an LI thing.
I work so my kids go to camp (our daycare does a camp schedule in the summer with different destinations each day that the kids love). But, if I was a SAHM - our town has a free playground camp M-F from 9-12 for kids that I would send my DS to (if we didn't have other plans).

I agree - definitely not only a long island thing. I went to camp and had friends from long island, new jersey, all 5 boroughs, california, maryland and france! There are a lot of camps in California too which leads me to believe that those kids that attend are coming from the west coast.
I begged to go to sleep away camp. It was awesome. I will let my kids go if they want to when they are a little older. I think I started at 12.
As for my own kids - I am a SAHM and my kids go to summer center at the school from 9-12. We go to Martha's Vineyard for August so while we are there they go to a farm camp for a week or two where they work on the farm.
I am not a big fan of these big day camps that offer every activity under the sun from 9-5 daily but mostly because I just think it's too much stimulation! And frankly I am super cheap and could never stomach the amount of money these places are asking.

Not a SAHM, but there seems to be a large range of what SAHMs in my area do. Some send their kids to camp for the whole summer, some do a few sessions of full day camp, some don't go to camp at all but may belong to a pool club and some enroll in the park and rec or local programs that have half day sessions. My kids are at camp because I work FT and they have had a great time at camp, but I think they would be bored if they stayed home I didn't at least have a lot of activities lined up over the summer. My kids are really active and are happiest when they are running around outside, playing sports, swimming, etc.
