Sad story... co-sleeping tragedy

I know there are many different views on co-sleeping. I, personally, have never been in favor of it because of the danger of it. I just read this story and thought I would share because, as sad as it is, I think it's a good eye opener. I know sometimes it seems like a good idea in the middle of the night, with a baby who won't sleep, and parents who are delirious with sleep deprivation. But I think this story can serve as a reminder of its serious risks. I hope not to offend anyone with this, that is definitely not my intention, but I wanted to share it as more of a PSA.

CBS article

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Court of Appeals has refused to dismiss charges against a couple accused of killing their baby in 2006 by sleeping with him — their second child to die in bed with them.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the judges sided with a lower court in a pair of opinions released Friday concerning the death of 3-month-old Kayson Merrill. The infant died while in bed between his father, Trevor Merrill, and mother, Echo Nielsen, of South Jordan.

The judges said that while a state medical examiner listed the official cause of death as "undetermined," there was enough evidence that "co-sleeping" caused the baby to suffocate to put the parents on trial.

The parents, whose first child also died while sleeping with them in 2003, have been charged with child-abuse homicide and reckless endangerment.

Chat Icon so sad. we did this a little at the beginning but god forbid we had lost a child that way, I dont think I would have done it with a second child

not to say that there should be charges against them- I am pretty sure that they are already in he!!

Re: Sad story... co-sleeping tragedy

Thats just stupid. If I'd lost a child while sleeping with me I'd be terrified to let another sleep with me. What the heck!?

I coslept with a barrier type thing in bed with us. NO WAY we could roll over on her.

Stuff like this is sad and terrible and tragic. Its also another reason folks who co sleep responsibly get a tough time.

SUCH an unnecessary loss. Chat Icon

It just doesn't seem right to me. Why would they do this again after losing a child from this?? I am not a fan of cosleeping because I never got a good nights sleep and I didn't like the feeling of falling into a deep sleep with the baby in bed. So sad :(

Re: Sad story... co-sleeping tragedy

OMG- 2 children died in their bed? What is wrong with them, how could they do it again after their first died while sleeping with them.

So incredibly sad.

So sad... those poor babies. Chat Icon

I'm sorry, but like others have said.. if it has happened before, maybe it's not a good idea to do it again with another child. They have plenty of products on the market these days that make cosleeping safe. If they were so pro-cosleeping, they should have taken precautions to make sure this didn't happen again. Complete negligence.

Because people are so stubborn that they feel their way is the right way. I hope those who scream about "safe cosleeping" read this. over and over.

Those parents have issues... Not because they coslept but because one baby died sleeping with them-so why in the world would they allow another to sleep with them!!!!!!

what are the other details? what was their bed like? where they drinkers/smokers? where was either baby found in relationship to the parents when they died?

I would need to see details before I attributed this to co-sleeping. just b.c you sleep with a baby does not mean you are practicing co sleeping.

I read it three times. I still believe in co sleeping. I was testing your theory. didn't work. but I am a Taurus...so maybe you are on to something with the stubborn thing.

Leo here...
same thing.

PRO - CO SLEEPER

yes there is a safe and healthy way to cosleep. Just because they didn't take the right precautions and obviously ignored the first tragedy doesn't mean I was irresponsible in sleeping with my child in my bed with us, nor does it in anyway change the fact that you can cosleep without ANY negative effects.

You would think if these people were so he** bent on co-sleeping, even after losing one baby to it, they'd at least follow the safety recommendations. The article says the baby was BETWEEN the parents. Guidelines for safe cosleeping specifically state that the baby should not be between parents.

I just don't see how you could do this again after losing one baby this way. Something seems wrong to me, but then again, maybe the parents really are that stupid.

Same here. We are given no information here in the article. Yes co-sleeping if not done incorrectly bit it can also be safe. Sounds like the baby died if SIDS but are attributing the death to co-sleeping because they did it in the past. I bet there are other underlying factors

I agree and agree. Please people, understand safe co-sleeping before you dismiss it. There is NOTHING in this article that details that it was the actual act of co-sleeping that caused the death of this poor child.

ITA! I hate how these stories become a warning for all of us pro-cosleeping parents. It's terribly sad that a baby died, but there are safe ways to cosleep and there's just not enough information to judge this situation.

ITA. Co-sleeping isn't for everyone, but it can be done safely and there are benefits to it.

I agree.

Not sure what caused the surge of anti co-sleeping articles lately, but I wish they'd either give more details or back off.

Co-sleeping can be done safely and responsibly.
This article is a good resourcehttp://www.askdrsears.com/topics/sleep-problems/faqs-about-sleep-problems/safe-co-sleeping-research for those interested.

ITA! I lost my first son to SIDS(he didn't die in my bed) and I am still a cosleeping mom. There is safe ways to do it. Who knows what these people were doing that was unsafe.

Re: Sad story... co-sleeping tragedy

Ok, I get that you meant well and whatnot...but this is ridiculous. TWO babies dying of suffocation clearly means they were in unsafe conditions. There IS a safe way to co-sleep...if you go to bed at night with a baby in your bed and loose sheets and a quilt in reach or near enough to smother them...obviously it's a hazard.

Co-sleeping has been done since the dawn of time. do you think the first humans had nice carved wooden cribs like we do? having babies sleep solitary is widely a WESTERN thing...plenty of other cultures do it and have a MUCH lower rate of sids than we do. I can agree that certain things we do learn as we evolve...but I will not accept co-sleeping as the blame for these poor childrens death. I would (after two consecutive losses by the parents) question the integrity of the parents involved and the safety they provided in the situation.

ETA: I find it ironic that pro-cosleepers are called stubborn for believing only our way is right (completely untrue, by the way) when clearly the poster who wrote that thinks only crib sleeping is right. I wonder what people in europe think of us...oh wait...I already know what people in Europe think of us Stubborn westerners.

It says the baby died between them..... Not under them.... I like to hear more details when the facts come out. Maybe some sort od family SIDS issue if two babies died.

I agree with others who cosleep and know there's such a thing as responsible cosleeping. It's not common here but very much so in other countries.

For those who want more info, this video is certainly helpful.

I asked all these questions as I read as well. I think there must be more to this story...

I do not co sleep but I do nap in bed with DD in my arms sometimes during the day (she falls asleep while bfing and sometimes I snooze with her)...and feel we are completely safe. This doesn't change my opinion.
