Sachem SD VS Smithtown SD
Which would you choose? Is one so much better than the other?
ETA: Please tell me why one would be better than the other.

While both are very good SDs. I would choose Smithtown (and did!)
They have a TON of resources (even if its smaller than Sachem we pay alot more in school taxes!)
My main reasoning would be size. Sachem's graduating class each year is so big they generally have the graduation at Hofstra (I think thats were it is) Smithtown while being large has 2 HSs and isnt nearly as big.
I also like that Smithtown is made up of just the Smithtown, St. James, and some of Nesconset.
Sachem is much large area - your kids friends are much more spread out.

Both School Districts have their own pros and cons. I am a graduate of Sachem before the district got split. Yes, my graduating class was around 1100, but nowadays, it's been cut in half with the addition of 3 brand new schools. The classes were NEVER oversized or impeded on your learning experience even with the larger system. To us, it just meant that our high school had only 2 grades, rather than the usual 4.
My daughter will be attending Smithtown schools. Good house, good neighborhood, and we knew either district would work. I do agree that the resources whether it be extracuricular, academic or sports....would be similar at either school.

I completely agree with this. I liked the fact that Smithtown is smaller. Smithtown also has a lot of great programs and opportunities.

I graduated from Sachem - Even when we we had one high school (North/South) our graduation was on our campus and was run like a machine - it was more fine tuned than any other I've been to and honestly for a graduating class of 1100 it wasn't that long. That being said I had a great experience there and was very involved and felt like I had a lot of opportunity there. I think no matter where you are, school is what you make of it. (what you put into it)

Yes, I am pretty sure Sachem North had their graduation outside the school again this year. I never heard of them having it anyplace else.

Yes, I am pretty sure Sachem North had their graduation outside the school again this year. I never heard of them having it anyplace else.
I graduated from Sachem too and as a high school teacher I now appreciate the opportunities I had in a larger school district. Plus. . . depending on where you live, taxes are much higher in Smithtown than Sachem.
