Rockville Centre vs Bayside

Hi Everyone,

I could really use your imput on these two areas. My hubby and I currently live in astoria and have a four month old. We will be buying a home at the end of next year and will be focusing on these two areas. I know bayside is a little more urban but where would you live if you had a choice between these two neighborhoods? and which has the better school district?. Thank you so much

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

Both are great areas but very different. RVC you will pay much higher taxes than Bayside, that's the biggest difference. Can you afford that difference?

Other than that, if you are looking to buy a home, personally speaking I would choose RVC b/c Bayside is much more congested. Just my opinion though.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

I grew up in Bayside and I think its almost impossible to compare the 2 towns. They are completely different.

It really depends on your lifestyle and what you want. If you commute - you really can't beat Bayside.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

Thanks for your imput I really appreciiate it. We can pay the tax difference up to a certain point. You are right about the congestion. I guess it is hard for me to part with city living lol. Do you or anybody else who wants to answer think there is as much to do in rockville cnetre as in a more urban setting?. Are there alot of parks?. Just trying to see if it would be worth our while to fore go bayside and have a longer commute for Rockville Center

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

Bayside has fantastic elementary schools and a great mix of urban/suburban life.

That said, if you plan to be there through high school you should know that there is no longer any city zoning for high schools - it's all an application process. So, while your kid might get into and go right down the block to Cardozo or Bayside, their best friends could be all over the city. Basically, it loses the tight-knit community feel once your kids get older because everyone is very scattered. We were in Little Neck and debated and debated what to do when we ultimately decided to move to LI (Lynbrook - next town from RVC) mainly for that reason.

RVC is great, it has a hard-to-find diversity in the high school which is refreshing to me - especially coming from Queens, great district, great town.

Thanks so much for responding. Diversity is very important as we are an interracial couple. That is good to know about the high schoools. We really want this to be our forever home and so it is a big debate as to what to do. Do any of you think rockville center has the same ammenities in terms of restaurants, parks etc that bayside or whitestone have?. My husband works in williamsburg and I work in downtown brooklyn and manhattan.

Yes, very much so.

RVC is a great area, with diversity yes and so many bars, restaurants, shpping, etc. IMO much more than Bayside. Schools are great, great community and excelllent for travel to boros and NYC.

I know exactly how you feel since DH and I vacillate between Queens and Nassau all the time. We are so used to everything being so close and open 24/7. RVC is going to be like most towns in Nassau/Suffolk, you're going to end up driving a lot more than you expect. Of course, there are exceptions and it depends on where your home is located. RVC has a lot of stores, parks etc but it's not like Astoria where there's a bodega on every corner.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

I was looking to buy in Bayside or Whitestone in 2007. I preferred Whitestone over Bayside because it is less congested. I ended up buying in Nassau because in 2007 a teeny tiny house that needed a compete gut job was going for 700's. They still might be in Bayside because it is a very $$ area although prices are probably better now. I almost bought a house in walking distance from the Bayside LIRR station (south of Northern off Bell Blvd) and I am so glad I didnt. I love the suburbs. RVC has a nice town with a lot of restaurants and bars that is very similar to Bell Blvd in Bayside.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. We are leaning towards RVC but the commute is a factor for me. My husband drives and does not mind it. We will likely have a nanny and I worry about getting home on time to relieve her if we live in RVC. Are the school districts of Bayside and RVC comparable?

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

I grew up by Bayside but I went to Catholic school so I really cant comment on the public schools. My guess would be that Bayside/Cardozo HS are just average schools. Most people I know from Bayside went to private schools for high school even if they went to public elementary.

Are you commuting in from Manhattan? I dont think the train ride to RVC would be much longer than Bayside, maybe 10-20 minutes longer? If you are taking the LIRR, it is not that easy to park by Bayside.

There is an express bus from Bayside to midtown but the trip is 1 hour plus.

Generally speaking in terms of LI districts that are excellent, RVC has more diversity than others that are comparable on rankings, economics, etc. At least that is what I encountered when doing research when house hunting.

We just bought in RVC. The town is amazing as is the school district. I don't know if I would say the town is diverse as far as race goes.

The town has a ton of restuarants and shops but not walking distance to most of the homes. Totally different vibe than bayside as it is more the burbs.

We moved to RVC 3 weeks ago. But my SIL has lived here for 10 years. We love it here!! Excellent Schools and so many amenities! We also have a great Rec. Center that offers so much especially for the kids.

My son's class is diverse. He has many nationalities but I think it depends on what section of RVC you look into.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

The diversity of RVC is not really within the town - it was within the high school (Southside) to which I was referring. It's RVC but also parts of Lakeview and S Hempstead that go to that high school.

You also have co-op kids, rental kids, million dollar home kids, average joe kids all in the same high school.

Your elementary school will only be as diverse as your surrounding blocks, of course.

I live in Oceanside and my dream is to live in RVC i would move there over any other town in LI. The houses are beautiful, if your catholic your church is a cathedral, the night light and restaurants are just as good as bayside , and the Schools are excellent. Make sure you are not in Malvern school district though!

No prob! There isnt a parking lot at Bayside, you have to park on the street. There are many apartment buildings by the LIRR so parking is tough.
