Response from a Professional Breeder

So I wrote to the breeder where we got Scout and told her about the puppy mill debates here. She wants to join when she has the chance but is very busy - in the meantime she asked me to post her response to my email--

I will address the puppy mill vs. breeder issue............
Although, I know I will probably get hit with a ton of bricks, that's how people are.
But I will grin and bear it.
And just try and educate people best I can. Maybe someone will learn something.
Let me first try to find some puppy mill sites.
They are pretty sad, and I try not to look, but in this case, maybe people need to see to believe.
The animals at Pet Shops ARE from Puppy Mills. These poor souls have been mistreated and abused. Not cared for properly and loved as an animal should be.
These animals don't really have a choice, and it is truly sad. People who choose to purchase their puppies from such places only support this inhumane industry. And you too, would be horrified if you saw the conditions of which your puppy actually came from.
And it is not a matter up for debate.
Those who do debate it, are not animal lovers at heart. Those that do, have only the intention for the best interest of the animals . Only a cruel and heartless person can run such a puppy mill. Real Breeders, do it for the Love they have for animals. ( The puppies are raised in a caring and loving environment. ) And the love they posses for the breed they are improving on, and working with. It is a passion that a breeder has, that words cannot explain. A true breeder, puts their heart, soul, spirit, and love into their animals. When you find that breeder, you will know it in your spirit and in your heart, and that is where you should get your pet, from this this breeder who you you trust. As this puppy will become your new family member for many years to come!!!
You can copy and paste this for now, and I will post soon.
Sincerely,
Gina Gaeta

Re: Response from a Professional Breeder

In addition to this, we also need a clarification into the differences between a puppy mill and a BYB.

Not ALL BYB are cruel individuals that abuse their "stock". Rather, they are uneducated about breed standards, are not in it for bettering a breed. Rather, they are in business for other reasons: $$, casual hobby, love of animals in general. BUT- they are very different from REPUTABLE breeders in that they are usually not responsible about researching and supporting healthy bloodlines. If they were, they'd register themselves and show their dogs.

BYB are the ones who happen to have 2 purebreeds and allow them to have a litter. BYB are the ones who have an unfixed beagle and decide to mate it with the neighbors pug. BYB are the couple who decide to let their dog have a litter to show their children "the miracle of birth." Do they all mistreat their animals? No. Are they irresponsible? Yes, because they don't know what genetic traits might arise from such pairings.

Most of the ads you see in the papers are from BYB.

This is a great point. I am not sure that the BYB phenomona has been explained to this end yet on here.Chat Icon

Excellent point!!! I agree, the topic of BYB has not been discussed nearly as much as PMs and yet they both need to be stopped.
