Removing Plaster Walls!!!
I have a few rooms in my house that still have plaster walls. I heard it is alot of work to remove them!! Has anyone done this or can anyone recommend someone they have used to remove their plaster walls. My dad will be putting up the sheetrock for me but he also said it is too much work to take down the plaster walls. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
DH did some research on this b/c the house we are buying has plaster. Apparently it is a lot of work and a huge mess. If I had the $ I would definitely hire someone. There is a lot of information available online.

Why do you want to remove them?

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
The walls are so uneven and the rooms are so cold!! I would just prefer to remove them and put up insulation and sheetrock the walls!

Yes please let me know how it goes!!! My husband wanted to do this when we bought our house 6 years ago and I didn't want to (I regret it now)! I was hoping I could hire someone because my husband loves to start projects but completing them is another story!!

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
We did this with one wall b/c we had to put a washer and dryer in and run lines...anyway, it was a HUGE mess, its not only plaster behind it was horizontal laths (series of small wood beams) with concrete between. Not sure if its always like this but just as a forewarning.

THiS.
We did some repairs in our old home and the lath is a killer. Such a PIA and so dusty and a LOT of debris. it's hard.

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
When we moved in, DH and I took down LOTS of plaster walls!!! It was a total PIA!!! There was dirt/debris EVERYWHERE!! We thought we'd be able to move in and live upstairs while we renovated downstairs but the dust was too much.
Moving and discarding the remnants of the walls was super hard. They were heavy and you couldn't put too many in a bag due to the weight and tearing the bags.
It was a total mess. Make sure you have masks while doing this. Our home was built in the 1950's so it was especially important for DH and FIL, who did most of the work.
We didn't touch the upstairs yet and I am completely dreading it. Thankfully, I *think* only one room has to be gutted, but knowing DH, we will gut both

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
We did it. Gutted 90% of the house. I agree with the previous posts plaster walls made such a mess!!!! My DH did everything himself so I don't have any recs.
Good Luck, looks so much better afterwards!

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
Pay someone to demo it.
I was young and dumb and we did some of the demo work ourselves on our last house. I was coughing up stuff for weeks.
Get a demo crew in, they'll be done in a day or so and you don't have to worry about it.
getting rid of it in bags? thats...... well beyond a pain. If you're going to do it yourself get a dumpster.
I used a guy in Wantagh called "Demo Dan" can't seem to find his contact info. but there are plenty of demo guys. I think S&M Dumpsters does demo too. haven't used them.
Its amazing how fast these guys work, and it makes your life so much easier. There are some things worth doing yourself to save money, and there are some where it is cheap semiskilled labor makes it worth your time to hire people.

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
we have plaster walls and DH has been slowly gutting our bathroom. it's a MESS! like all PP's said the lath/concrete part is the worst.
one problem that we ran into in our bathroom is that all of the studs are uneven. I guess it didn't matter if the framing is even when you have plaster but now that we're putting up sheetrock it all has to be level. DH has been set back a lot because he's had to reframe all of the walls.

Re: Removing Plaster Walls!!!
Thank you all so much for your responses!! I am SOOOOO happy I posted this question before we began the work! Before posting this my husband was like "I can bang it out in a few days!" After reading your responses I have decided to first call a a few companies to see how much they would charge me for 2 rooms and getting rid of all the debris too. I totally agree that it is worth it to pay someone in order to save our sanity!!! Good luck to all that are currently in the process of removing their plaster walls!!
