Religion Question
I am really asking this out of sheer curiousity - and because I am trying to figure my own self out.
If you identify yourself as a particular religion, do you follow the doctrine of that religion? If you do not - why do you still consider yourself a member of that religion?
I am Catholic - but I am totally 'lapsed'. I rarely go to church anymore and I actually had a little chicken last Friday. I am becoming what my parents called "A&P Catholics" - they stop in to grab sometime on Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday...
But I still tell people I am Catholic (if they ask).. even though I am not 100% invested in the way of the church. I am not sure why? I think maybe I should just start identifying myself as a 'homeless' Christian?

Re: Religion Question
I usually say "My Mom is Protestant". I think that answers a lot. It tells my upbringing, but it also says that I am not currently identifying myself with any particular religion.

What you wrote sums up exactly how I am as well...
I can't in good faith say I am a 100% practicing catholic. I don't always go to mass, I pick and choose when I feel like going...but I don't think it makes me a bad catholic.
I don't agree with a lot of the catholic churches teachings. BUT with that being said, the church also does a lot of good and has made some improvements.
I find that sometimes I just take comfort in being in church..praying for things that are concerning to me, listening to what the priest is saying and just taking a moment to give thanks for all i have.
I do not follow the doctrine very well...but I try to be a good person and yes, I still associate myself as a catholic.

Re: Religion Question
i tell people either that "my family is jewish" or "my parents are jewish" - they don't usually ask me much after that. if they press me, i will tell them i am agnostic (and explain what that is, if need be) but it doesn't usually go that far.
the only thing about the jewish religion i identify with is the sense of community, but that only extends as far as my own family and a few friends of my parents.

Re: Religion Question
I am a very devout Lutheran and I am proud to say that. I agree with a lot of the church doctrine but I have some issues with some of the other rules (no female communion assistants, no female congregational presidents, no female clergy, etc). Luckily my district is very liberal and my congregation breaks a lot of those rules (except for the no female clergy obviously). When the time comes that I need to look for a new congregation, I will make sure that it is liberal in that way, too but my main priority is what is said from the Pulpit.

No on in NC ever asks, they a$$ume you go to church. I like the don't ask, don't tell philosophy down here.
ets: Also in NC, the more prevelant questions are, "Who is your favorite NASCAR driver?"and "What part of NY are you from?"

Re: Religion Question
I am an oxymoron and I freely admit it
I am atheist, but at the same time, I'm Jewish. I don't believe necessarily in any of the tenets of Judaism, other than the ideology that there is no heaven or hell and that we should live in the here and now, and that we live on through people's memories of us, our legacy and our children.
But, Judaism is very intertwined with jewish culture - of which, I'm deeply connected to. I identify very strongly with my jewish heritage, and the jewish cultlure. So, I still identify myself as jewish even though I don't believe in the religious ideologies.

Re: Religion Question
I tell people: "I was raised Catholic"
I've been going to church every week recently for my husband. Since his father passed he has become very religious. He used to be a cafeteria Catholic. I feel strange going because I don't believe a lot of the teachings and I don't agree with many of the rules. I do like the idea of going and giving thanks as a PP mentioned also.

Re: Religion Question
When people ask, I tell them I am Roman Catholic (even though I don't go to Church) because I was raised as a Roman Catholic. I was baptised, completed my communion and confirmation.
I guess I could be considered a non-practicing (or maybe non-observant) Roman Catholic?

I am Roman Catholic and follow the doctrine of the church. I attend mass every week and participate in the sacraments (holy Eucharist, reconciliation, etc.)
As do I.

Re: Religion Question
when i am asked what ia m, i say, "i was baptized catholic".
I havent been to church in over 7 yrs (other than a wedding or funeral) and we didnt get married in church either.
My family and Dhs family still consider themselves a part of the religion but we do not. Easter is Sunday and DH and i would rather stay home but.... itll make my mom happy that we come so we will.
Good luck in your search for spirituality.

Re: Religion Question
A&P Catholics We call them hatched, matched and dispatched Cathoilics. They come for baptisms, weddings and funerals.
I am Roman Catholic. I went to Catholic school and attended mass every weekend and on holy days of obligation. For a while I had stopped going to mass but now I go every weekend. This weekend it will be hard to get a seat with the Easter crowd we haven't seen them since Christmas

I do the same, I usually say "My mom is Lutheran" my sisters and I were raised Lutheran, but my father and I are Agnostic.
People don't usually have a good reaction to me telling them that, lol.
My husband converted to Lutheran and our daughter was baptised Lutheran. So I say my family is Lutheran.

Re: Religion Question
I go to church every week, teach religion, etc. So it's not a stretch to say "I'm Catholic"
but similary my FH doesn't ever attend services, does not observe at all. He does fast on Yom Kippur, observe passover (albeit the sephardic way, not the ashkenazi way he was raised with), and give me presents for hanukkah. He's the equivalent of the A&P Catholics, but he has no hesitation saying he's Jewish (probably because he also considers it part of his enthnicity).

Re: Religion Question
I have to add that I don't care if people call themselves Catholic and don't go to church.
What bothers me more are people who go to church with their gf after leaving their families behind and claim to be Catholic
or on a less personal level, the people who are in church every week, but walk out, and cut you off in the parking lot and curse and are nasty to people for the rest of the week. Showing up at Church doesn't make you a good Catholic or a good anything.

No female clergy? That's weird....At Cross of Christ in Babylon, the pastor is a female. Maybe it's a different synod?

I was thinking that too, about the different synod. My friend's mom is a Lutheran pastor in Bellmore and my mom is a decon at her church.
