Registery - How did you know what to register for?

The whole process seems overwhelming. How did you pick out all your stuff? Where do you start?

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

BRU or BBB will give you a checklist of things you need.

Here's a real basic guideline:

Bottles
Boppy
Highchair
Pack and Play
Swing
Exercauser
Jumperoo
Bouncer
Newborn to Toddler Rocker
Sheets
Changing table covers
Stroller
Carseat
Convertible Carseat
Snap and Go
Onesies

ETA: How the heck could I forget the Summer Handheld Video Monitor - I still live by this thing 19 months later!

the first thing you NEED to do is get your hands on Baby Bargains. Most book stores carry it - the most recent edition is the purple cover.

this book is like the BIBLE for baby stuff!

The stores will give you a list, but the best thing to do is bring a friend who has a child. She was so helpful and gave me a lot of opinions on what you need and things you feel you should register for, but then never use.

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

they do give you a list but alot of it you can do without! like all of the exersaucers and stuff. I registered for 1 swing, 1 bouncer and one tummy time play thing. other than that, he'll have tons of toys and will be sleeping alot! hopefully haha. you don't need a bottle warmer or a sterilizer. you just sterilize everything in a pot of boiling water. just go through the list they give you and think practically what you really NEED. you don't wanna register for little things and get that over the things that you really need. good luck!

Not sure how old your DC is but we personally couldn't live without the exercauser. My son was in it from 5 months to 10 months - every single day. He loved this thing! It is a huge lifesaver to be able to have them entertained and playing, and actually be able to do things around the house. Pretty much everyone I know says the same thing about the exercauser!

I do have to agree. My best friends' daughter didn't like the swing OR bouncy seat - but LIVES in her exercauser thingy...

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

DS is in my belly!!! but I do know that you don't need every single thing out there. I personally registered for those 3 but I don't see the need to register for a jumper, exersaucer, swing, bouncer, belly time, etc. just pick 2 to 3 out of them and that should be enough! plus they aren't cheap! I'll probably end up getting an exersaucer later on, but I definitely don't need every thing out there

I'm def. not saying that you need to purchase everything out there. The OP asked what to register for - and I gave my experience as a BTDT mom. For me, and a ton other moms - the exercauser is a must, not everyone needs to get it though - but since the OP asked the question I gave her answers on things WE used.

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

I guess I should've clarified that you don't need every single toy out there, but to choose just a few. not something specific. thanks for your input, maybe i'll change the bouncer to the exersaucer. sorry if i offended you

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

ya see the thing with the 'more toy' purchases is that you have no idea what your baby will like...

my close friend Alicia - has two boys - 2 years apart.

Her oldest - James, LOVED the swing, couldn't STAND the bouncer, would FREAK if you put him in it. Didn't want much to do with the exersaucer either...

Her youngest Matthew - CANNOT STAND the bouncer, but loved the swing... LOVED the living daylights out of the exersaucer too, in fact, used it soo much - she needed a new one...keeping in mind that her older one NEVER used it...it was newer...

Unfortunately, it's one of those things - you're better off having the extras and not needing them, than having to run to a store at 9:00 at night because your baby doesn't like the swing, bouncer or something else - ya know??

I'm def. not offended at all - just wanted the OP to know that alot of people love the exercauser.

I also loved the bouncer so I wouldn't switch it out - they do two completely different things! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you for your advice as a BTDT mom...I definately agree with you that while it isnt mandatory it is definately helpful to have as many of the items out there. They all have their own uses and functions. The bouncer for example can be used foor sleeping or playing....the exersaucer can be used for mainly playing and entertainment. I say its best to register for any item you are interested in...if it doesn't get bought then you can decide if you really want it or if you can wait until the baby is older. I got the registry itch and put it all...I was so sure that most of it wouldn't get purchased and it ALL got bought..it's just one less thing you and your DH will have to buy down the road...

I read baby bargains, it helped A LOT

then they had a sample registry in the back, w/out the extra fru fru, so you know what you REALLY need to register for first...and then the extra stuff Chat Icon

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

I agree with PP about Baby Bargains. I am using that as my "guideline" on the must haves & also to get ratings. Then I am using the checklist that BRU gives you to make sure I don't forget things.

I would like to add a mobile to the list. This thing has been a lifesaver. I have the Tiny love mobile. I can put DS in his crib for a while and do things while it entertains him. Someone once described this mobile as "kiddie crack!" Chat Icon

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

I've probably been to BBB/BRU about 15 times. I was totally overwhelmed in the beginning but now I could probably work there because I know each department so well! Chat Icon

Start with the fun stuff. I know that I started with strollers, swings, bouncers, and high chairs. Then I moved on to pack n plays, playmats, and car seats. I got overwhelmed when we looked into bottles/nursing and took a break for a while. Then one day I tackled that.

At the end, I realized I didn't have enough gifts to guests who were coming to my shower so I started registering for anything and everything I wouldn't mind having.

Re: Registery - How did you know what to register for?

I agree with the first reply... with the exception that Bottles and Onsies do not need to be registered...people will buy plenty of clothes as it is... and bottles you might try a couple brands til you find one you like...

Also- Video Monitor is great to have
a bassinet or cosleeper
gates

for swings i picked a "cradle swing" you can swing left to right in addition to front and back..

I didnt buy the Baby Bargains book... did some searching on here, looked at BRU online and Amazon which people post reviews of items...
