Recycling Gifts: Do You Do It? (Thoughts & Feelings On It?)
Over the weekend the family got together to exchange gifts for Hanukkah (yes a bit late but better late than never).
My SIL works for a large company that has ties to NASCAR..and DH and I are into NASCAR so she gave DH and I a $100.00 NASCAR store gift card.
Normally we'd be thrilled since we can use the gift card- but we found out that she recycled the card on us! The company wrote To (SIL) from (Company) on the card and then she taped over it with DH and my names and from her, BIL and our nieces.
I'm a bit peeved ...how would you feel finding out that a family member regifted a gift on you?

Well, I admit I have given things that I KNOW would be better appreciated by someone else, so when I give it to them, I make sure they know that it was something I got that I thought they'd like better, and it is never their "only" gift from me. I think it is OK to give something to someone else that you know they would like.
But in this instance, even if your SIL knew that you liked Nascar, she should have used the GC to get you something instead of just taping over her name.
This is NOT your year for holiday gifts, huh?

Honestly, especially in this case, I have no problem with it! If it is something you guys love and they won't use, why not? I have bought other people gifts with gift cards I have received. I don't see a difference. What does it matter if the gift comes from the right pocket or the left one?

Something like that wouldn't bother me since it's something you would like and use. The gift is still from them. If you hated NASCAR and couldn't use it, then it would be a crap gift but only because it was thoughtless not because it was recycled.

I agree with this. It wouldn't bother me a bit if it was known as something I liked.

Honestly?
Who cares?
She probably just knew you'd appreciate it and that's it. I wouldn't care about recycling and what not. It's a GC so something like that being re-gifted means nothing to me.
I see no reason to be peeved. It's better than not getting anything.
I think this holiday season we should just be happy to get anything and just be grateful.

I am happy with the gift (thank goodness) and that she knew that we'd appreciate it. But it was written on the actual gift card. I just feel that she shouldn't have taped over her name like that...to me that's just asking for issues. I would have take the card out and bought a gift card holder or put it in a really nice holiday card.
DH was really peeved since my BIL made a stink about his gift from us even though there was no need for him to do that.
I should also mention that in general we don't have a good relationship with my BIL and SIL to begin with.

I would never use that as my gift to the person... i dont know if id be peeved if i was the recipient though...

You were able to celebrate the season with your DH and family who have their health -- crappy magazine subscription, recycled gift card, at least they are around.
Sorry to be so harsh, but if you look at all the threads posted recently about losing loved ones and such, others weren't/aren't so lucky...

My company gave me an iPad for Christmas. I considered regifting it but didn't want to upset that person with a recycled gift. Instead I bought that person a subscription to Motor Trend Magazine.

i don't but i was recently accused of regifting a photo album to a "friend" at her bridal shower.
a bridal shower that i was a bridesmaid in...
a bridal shower that i chipped in $75 for the food for...
i picked up a small gift for her so that i didn't show up empty handed.
that'll teach me to throw away receipts.
we are no longer friends

i am guilty of this  my sister is a teacher and so before xmas she will get TONS of things. i will usually take a box of chocolates she got and give it to DH's grandma on xmas when we go over.. hey my sister wasn't going to eat them anyway!

I have regifted if I felt the gift was something the other person would like but, in this case, I would've taken it out of its packaging instead of taping over it.

I don't mind the concept of regifting if it's not just to give whatever crap you got as a present.
But recycling a gift that you know someone will love, why not.
I have never done it though.

I have to agree, I think$100 GC to a place you enjoy is a great gift, that is a lot of money to play with. Especially if it is coming from someone who you have a tough relationship with, who cares how she got it.

the part that is bolded is the part i agree with the most.
only you know that relationship and why it would upset you.
in general, i don't mind to receive a recycled gift... as long as it's something i can actually use
