RE: glucose test WWYD

I failed the 1 hour with a 140 and vomited on my way home from it. My face turned green I felt really ill. Went for the 3 hour and 20 minutes after drinking the drink I start to feel ill and they have me lye down and I vomit all over the floor. With my first pregnancy I also vomited the first time i drank it and had to reschedule the one hour but passed.

I REALLY REALLY don't want to put myself through this again. I don't like the way it makes me feel I don't like how the baby kicks like crazy when i drink it. I spoke to my OB about it and he said he obviously cannot force me and that it is likely everything will be fine but he still must advise me to take the test to avoid any issues with GD if I do in fact have it.

I am 28.5 weeks along. I have only gained 10 lbs so far, so far baby looks great and measuring where he should be. I'm torn. on one hand I don't want to be selfish and I want to suck it up and do what's best for baby, but on the other hand I feel like I should trust my body and if it doesn't feel right to me then I should trust myself on that. I also feel like...in germany and other countries they don't even take this test and they have healthy babies. I don't know...like I said I'm torn. WWYD?

I would decline the test and discuss testing my blood sugar daily with my OB. Gestational diabetes is serious and if you cannot take the 3 hour glucose tolerance test you should make sure that your blood sugars are normal. You can have GD and feel fine.

As much as it sucks, if it were me, I would either take the test again. We have to go through so much crap during pregnancy and it sucks, but no matter how you feel or how little you gain, I would still play it safe.

Weight gain has nothing to do with gd. I would either take the test or go on as if you have gd as far as diet and testing blood sugars.

RE: glucose test WWYD

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks and felt fine also. I would either retest or discuss testing sugar right away. I personally don't think it's something to ignore. Good luck!

I just read on this board that someone else was able to drink apple juice instead of the glucose drink. Maybe there is another option, like that, for you? I agree with you that they don't make pregnant women suffer these tests in other countries, and things are fine. Also, the tests are notoriously inaccurate, and doctors can't even agree on a passing number or whether fasting is better than not fasting, etc. However, I still took it, bc until something better comes along, it's better to be safe than sorry. I wouldn't just do nothing...I'd talk with your doctor about other ways to tell if you might have GD.

Interesting you mention Germany as a country that doesn't test for GD...

13+ pound baby born in Germany "In Jasleen's case, doctors said her size is due to an undiagnosed case of gestational diabetes"

ITA..at least test yourself and follow a good diet but remember, you can feel totally fine and still have GD.

RE: glucose test WWYD

As someone who was diagnosed with GD at 13w, I lost 27lbs (until a few weeks ago when I started to slowly gain an avg. of .5lb per week), baby girl is measuring right on schedule, I feel fantastic (with the exception of typical pregnancy aches and pains lol), etc.

I believe someone on here declined the 3 hour test but tested their blood sugar 4 times a day for awhile to rule out GD. Maybe see if you can do that?

Re: RE: glucose test WWYD

Generally if you cannot tolerate the 3 hour test your OB should treat you as if you have GD and send you to the nutritionist and for blood sugar testing. In fact, I'm not sure why your OB hasn't done this yet. Have you discussed your inability to complete the test with him yet?

FWIW, when I was diagnosed with GD I felt great and had not gained one pound yet. I only gained 10 lbs the entire pregnancy.

I had horrible reactions every time I took the 3 hour (3x), and I got so paranoid the last time I begged my midwife to let me skip it and they would not budge.

In the end, the temporary reaction was worth knowing I had GD and how to manage it properly.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Get yourself a glucose monitor and just test your sugars upon waking and after every meal. As long as they are within normal range you should be fine. If you notice any unusual spikes in your sugar or your numbers are higher than they should be let your OB know so they can monitor you.

Sorry you had such a rough time with the test. Chat Icon

It was me with the juice. My midwife wrote me a script that said "own juice okay" and I was able to drink any juice that had 50mg of sugar. The Tropicana apple juice container had 48g, so I had one and a sip of another. This was for the 1 hr, but maybe you can ask to do that?

That was me. I failed the one hour, declined the 3-hour, and told my OB to treat me as if I have GD. I was sent to the high-risk doctor and was told to monitor my blood sugar levels for a few weeks. I was cleared of GD. Very happy with my decision. That glucose test is nasty.

I would take the test, as much as it sucks, there can be issues if GD goes untreated

I would take the test or be treated as if you have GD.

There are complications of untreated GD. As the others have said it has nothing to do with weight gain

I would ask for the another method to take in glucose as others said. I heard of an M&M method where you eat X# before the test. Otherwise you should test your blood sugar as if you have GD.

GD is not uncommon and can affect you regardless of weight or diet but have no symptoms. It's manageable but if you don't know you have it can be very dangerous to both mom and baby.
