Question for those who work in offices...
How much time is one allowed to be sick before it gets ridiculous?
It's hard to explain - we have had people (one person in particular) who has literally been out sick for two and a half weeks.
When asked she says she has the "flu" but another person in the office who had the flu was out for four days plus the weekend (out on a Tuesday to return Monday) and said she basically went to the doc and got meds and was better in that amount of time.
It is getting to the point, in the office, where there is SO much of this person's work piling up that we are all working triple to get our job done plus hers and it is overwhelming.
I feel like when are we going to say "enough is enough"? When should this person have to provide a doc's note saying she is still sick - and during our BUSIEST time of the year where taking ONE day off, supposedly, is frowned upon - is this fair?
Sorry to sound so whiny - I don't mean to kvetch but I've been coming in early, staying late and working on my days off to cover and I'm
I'm looking to see how other workplaces handle this stuff...

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
To be honest, I thought that after a certain amount of sick time, the person had to go on disability pay...?

Is that depending where they work??
Or is that a state law?
We work for a private company and we have our own rules and it just seems unfair that sometimes they just let the rules go out the window in certain cases.
I just feel like I - or anyone I know lol - would NEVER be able to get away with this and I feel like someone should say what is going on here?!

At my job if you're out more than 3 days you need a doctors note or you don't get paid. ETA: I also thought after a certain period of time they need to be on disability.

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
We're allowed 6 sick days, after that any time off (other than personal or vacation) is without pay.
I believe any sick time out after 3 consecutive days requires a doctor's note.
Doesn't your company have an employee handbook? It should say in there what the protocol is.

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
I guess it's dependent on where you work... I have unlimited sick days, for example, but I don't think that I'd be able to be sick for more than 2 weeks unless something catastrophic happened.
Do you have an HR department? Maybe you could get them to clarify the policy and tell them that it's not be followed?

But maybe he/she doesn't have the 'flu' maybe it is something else and they don't want the entire office knowing about it.
You have to think about it that way too

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
do you know for a fact that a dr's note has not been provided.
that really isn't any of your concern, so your bosses may not tell you (unless you are the boss and work in hr)
also, the flu could be just an excuse for another more serious illness that your colleague does not want to divulge. also not your concern and totally at his/her discretion.
if you are all truly overworked and there is no end in site, perhaps your employer could seek to hire a temp.
this way you could get help and your colleague can recover without worrying how much work is being left behind.

One of my coworkers just came back to work after being out for about six weeks. We have no idea what was/is wrong with him, but he did need to provide documentation to HR for disability purposes.

Is she getting paid for this time off?
Who knows, maybe she's working some place and wants to see if it works out there before she leaves your place.

That is def very odd. I guess being that no one is saying anything to her about it, she figures she can still continue to do it.

we are not allowed to use sick time as vac. after 3 consecutive days you need a note.
Frankly I would speak to your boss about your workload/situation. Unless she is hiding a bigger medical issue and maybe thats why no one has said anything because they are aware. I guess you could have a really bad case of the flu but she should be showing up or working from home.

The flu can last up to 2 weeks and there is no medication to be given once you have it and even if you have been vaccinated you can still get it. It is highly contagious and if she does have the flu then it's best if she stay home. The other emplyee probably had a bad cold or virus. Flu
My dad was just diagnosed with teh flu and his doctor prescried him Tamiflu. But that is only useful if you start it within 2 days of the symptoms. It will cut down on your flu time.
Where I work, we get 6 sick days a year, but if we are out for more than 3 consecutively, we need the doctors note.

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
I had the flu in January and took a total of 2 days off for it - the 2nd day was a Friday and I went to the Doctor). I was fine after the weekend, not 100%, but well enough to be back at work.
2.5 weeks IMO is rediculous. some people don't take that much time off after having surgery. I agree that she should have gone out on disability.

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
She should have presented a doctor's note by now.
She should remember she is still an "at will" employee and she could easily be terminated for this.
I would have her produce a doctors note or issue a warning.

There might be something going on where they are just saying they are sick to cover it up. your employer might know the truth and she just doesn't want to share it with you.

I just read this thread further and it looks like the OP isn't the manager. So yes it is possible there is something going on behind the scenes that you are not privy to that information.

Rereading, I now get the same impression.
You probably aren't privy to what's going on for numerous reasons... If the workload it just too much for your department to handle, though, maybe you can gently approach your boss about it? Don't make it personal against the personout sick -- but just ask if you could possibly brainstorm ideas for how to better allocate the workload until the other person comes back.

Re: Question for those who work in offices...
In my office we have to provide a doctor's note after the 3rd day. 2 weeks seems like a long time for the flu but as other posters have said maybe there's something more going on that she does not want you guys to know about.
