Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I'm starting to think about birth announcements for when the baby comes, but I wanted to get people's opinions. I really really do not want people who receive them to feel like it's asking for a present - that is definitely not my intention and that's why I'm not sure whether I should send them out or not. When you get one in the mail - what's your take? Do you feel like you need to send something? Do you feel like that's why it was sent to you?
Thanks!

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I LOVE getting birth announcements! I never feel like the person is asking for a gift. I always feel like they are overjoyed to have a child and want to share a beautiful photo (or a few) with me.

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I love getting birth announcements from my friends, and I have never thought it's a request for a gift. Any gifts that I have sent to new babies have been 100% because I wanted to, and had nothing to do with whether or not they even sent an announcement.

I have never thought about being asked for a gift when I receive a birth announcement. As a matter of fact, I have usually purchased and/or given the gift before I even get the announcement!

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I have never felt obligated to send a gift for a birth announcements. I'm not a NON parent but I even felt that way before having a child.
An invitation to a shower or party, I feel obligated, but not a birth announcement.

I never look at a birth announcement as a "Gimme a gift". I see it as a family proud to show off their newborn and love it.

OK guys -thanks for the input. Like I said, that's definitely not my intention in sending one, so I'm glad to see (so far) that people don't feel that way.

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
Usually when I get a birth announcement I already sent or was planning to send a gift anyway.
I received one from someone I am not that close to & wasn't invited to a shower for (I know there was one though) & I didn't think of it as a request for a gift. I just sent a card to congratulate them, since we don't talk on a regular basis.
I usually already know about the birth, but I like the official announcement--so I can make sure i have the name spelled right!

I wouldn't think at all it was for a gift! I would just assume they want to share their good news with everyone!!

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I've always taken it as just that; an announcement. Anytime I've gotten an announcement, I was also invited to the shower and/or the christening party and that was the occasion for the gift.
Do people expect presents for giving birth to a child? I wasn't aware that might be a present-giving opportunity, honestly.

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I hate getting birth announcements. I hate clutter, have no room on my fridge and feel terrible throwing out the baby picture.
I don't feel it's a solicitation for a gift.

I love seeing the pictures of the babies. And I have never seen it as asking for a gift. A shower invite on the other hand.....

I don't know if people expect it, but I usually bring something when I go to see the baby & If I am not going to be able to, I will send something.

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
See, there would be people who I would be sending the announcement to who were not invited to the shower because they live across the country, things like that. I think my concerns are for especially those people - don't want them to feel they have to send something.

I love getting them! I never, EVER interpret them as requesting gifts, though.
Send them!
And congratulations!

Re: Question for the Non-Parents about Birth Announcements...
I see the concern, as I have the same for Miss Bean's baby naming, but I love getting announcements. If I am going to send a gift, I am going to send it regardless of an announcement. I don't think they are a request for gifts but more the parents wanting to share their beautiful baby!
