Question about midwives
Not PG yet, but definitely want to use a midwife. How does that work? I know my insurance covers it, but how do I go about finding one? When I do get PG I want to deliver at NSUH, but I'm not sure how all of this works, and if they work with my OB/GYN.

Re: Question about midwives
Honestly, I think your going to have a hard time finding a midwife who delivers at NSUH. I might be wrong, but I have yet to meet a midwife with hospital rights there. I was originally supposed to deliver there and found it very much grounded in the "old school" medical model, so I can't imagine it being a place where a midwife would choose to deliver. You might have better luck with Winthrop. You pretty much go about it the same way you do finding an OB -- see who takes your insurance, get some recommendations from friends, do interviews.
I used Stony Brook midwives and loved them. I've also heard good things about Dale Cook, she delivers at Huntington Hospital and Nassau University Medical Center (the only place on Long Island where you can get a water birth).
As for working with your OB -- midwives have their own OBs who back them up in case of emergency. You get all your prenatal care from your midwife. You can go back to your old OB/GYN after the baby is born for GYN care. FM me if you have any more questions.

Re: Question about midwives
My OB/GYN practice had 3 midwives that they worked with, but they preferred to only deliver at certain hospitals. Honestly, I preferred the midwives and wish I had chosen to stick with them instead of the MDs.
