Question about guns in the home
Does anyone ask the parent's of their children's drop off playdates if there is a gun in the home? Would you find it odd if someone asked you that question?
I did ask for a while because of a Lisa Ling show that was on a while ago about guns in America. I haven't asked recently, but last weeks Grey's Anatomy about one 8 year old shooting another with the mother's gun got me thinking again…. You just never know who keeps a gun in the house and what type of safety precautions they take.
And oddly, my father was a police officer and kept his gun unlocked on top of the refrigerator while I was growing up. But the thought of kids who might be curious about guns coming across one scares the sh*t out of me! And I have spoken to my son about what to do if he or any of his friends ever comes across a gun, but he's 8. You just never know what could happen….

Question about guns in the home
That episode freaked me out and further solidified my hatred of guns. Dh is ex military and has always wanted one and after that episode he's like well I guess I'm never getting one.
I will probably ask as dd gets older since I'm extremely against guns especially I want to know where it is kept if the person is a police officer or such.

Question about guns in the home
We have guns in our house. I have never had anyone ask me if we did but i would have no problem if they asked. The guns are locked up and the kids have no access to them but if someone is not ok with it there is nothing I can do about it.

Re: Question about guns in the home
We have guns. We have a huge safe in our basement and they are locked up always! Weve never had parents ask, but then again we live in NH now where the gun laws are very different.
I would never think to ask but I may in the future!

Ditto. The guns can never be found and they are locked in a gun safe. However, there is nothing more I can do. We can't get rid of the guns.

Re: Question about guns in the home
Thank you for posting. I'm curious myself. This topic just came up at work too. My kids are too young now, but when they are older and go on play dates I'm def. going to be asking this question. I just don't want to come off like the "crazy mom". I don't want to offend anyone either. I don't have guns in my house, but I'm not opposed to them. I just don't feel comfortable letting my kids play where any fire arms are unlocked (IE: on top of a refridge, etc).

Re: Question about guns in the home
Funny this came up bc my 1st grader just had a whole lesson on the safety of guns in a home. He told me when he came off the bus he will never touch them and they are not safe and can hurt someone. There was also an activity book too. LOL! Glad he got that lesson.
We don't own guns and never thought to ask, but so far all the play dates he has gone to is family friends we know very well. One friend's husband works for the FBI so I assume they have guns in the home, but they are very responsible and know they are locked away. They have kids and friends over all the time.

Re: Question about guns in the home
In the Grey's episode, which is clearly fiction, the guns were locked and put away in the parents bedroom. I do know in the Lisa Ling special parents were shocked to discover that kids knew where they hid their guns. I feel like if the gun was locked up in a safe that required a fingerprint or had a dial lock that would be very hard for a kid to figure out it would be okay but I would really need to be comfortable with the fact that there was no way the kids could get ahold of them.

Question about guns in the home
For the people who do have guns in your homes, I'm curious as to why? Not trying to start a gun debate, just honestly curious. For hunting?

Our guns would be out of reach of the average child- unless they are about 5 foot 9 with a long reach- and are in a safe with a 4 digit code. We don't have the retina scan on it yet, but it's pretty secure against the average 5-10 year old IMO

My fil likes going to the gun range. He got my DH a few guns over the years so they can go together. They do go hunting but not alot.

Question about guns in the home
honest question cause i never understood this....
for those who have guns in a locked safe and not loaded...lets say you get robbed or someone breaks in...is it realistic that you'll get to the safe, unlock it and load it in time?

I'm curious as well. When someone says they have a gun for protection, but that they are responsible with it and have it unloaded and locked in a safe (which is wonderful), I can't help but be confused as to how that would help you in a spur of the moment situation.

YUP! Me too! Guns give me anxiety! DH wants one but I REFUSE!
As for the OP's question, I never thought to ask until this episode but once our son is older I will DEFINITELY be asking.

Re: Question about guns in the home
I used to ask, but I now live in PA and basically everyone has one. Some people even walk around carrying (non police or military). I honestly have limited play dates to my house only, but my oldest is 7, so I'm sure that won't last forever lol. I'm not a fan of trusting other people to be responsible. I don't care that they have guns in their homes, but people make mistakes all the time and it only takes one time for an accident.

Question about guns in the home
I haven't asked yet. I know some of our friends do have them as they are law enforcement officers.
Without asking, these friends have mentioned their protocol for protecting their children and any children in their home and I trust them completely.
As these folks are concerned for their own children's safety, I know they have no issues if someone were to ask them if their guns are secure.

I too am curious as I cannot wrap my head around having one for protection if the above steps are taken. DH mentioned wanting to get one to go to the range and I will absolutely not allow it in the home. He can find a range where he can pay to store it there if he truly wants it, but not in our home.
I have not asked at the last play dates we had because the kids were playing in the same room we were in.
After watching last week's Grey's episode I do plan on asking for future play dates. I could care less if they think I am crazy, I am not willing to take the chance of another child knowing where their parents keep the gun in their home and how to access it. Like the episode mentioned, even if you think your child doesn't know where or how; they do.

Every play date I ask:
1. Do you have a firearm in the house 2. Do you have a trampoline

Re: Question about guns in the home
Kids are observant. How many kids pick up on their parents iphone passwords. I definitely plan on asking and even after finding, I still don't know if I'd allow my kids to go to someone's house without me if there was a gun. Call me paranoid but a kid is accidentally shot or shoots someone every day. I'm not taking any chances. I felt this way before the Grey's episode and even more so after.

Question about guns in the home
My husband is a gun hobbyist. He enjoys building them and going to the range. If anything, it's a passing phase that he isn't really into anymore, but we have them. Locked in a safe that my child has never seen nor has access to in a part of the house he has never been to, with a fingerprint scan AND lock on the door to the room. He does not take the guns out to show people when children are around AT ALL. I am confident that children are safe in my home despite the presence of firearms.
