Queens Girls-- Please Advise on this neighborhood!!

Hi! We are in the process of moving to a new apartment because our one bedroom will not hold my husband and I +the baby on the way.

We currently live in Glendale (off myrtle ave & the 60's)... we are looking to move to a 2bdr in UPPER Glendale OR we are looking at something at Ozone Park.

My question is... I know NOTHING about Ozone Park... can you ladies tell me anything and everything about it? Be honest!

depends on which part of ozone park - there are some nicer areas and some bad area's. My inlaws still live in ozone and the area where they are isn't bad at all.

Re: Queens Girls-- Please Advise on this neighborhood!!

Thanks for the input ladies... This would not be where we live for the rest of our lives... maybe 1-2 years max. With that said we will be having a baby so I want somewhere QUIET and a place where I can take the baby for walks without having to worry about anything.

This is the intersection, if this helps narrow it down to which area.

137th St. & 96 place.

DH grew up in SOP and knows the area well. He said 137th Street itself isn't all that great and should probably look somewhere else. You're actually right by JFK and it is noisy with planes.

I wouldn't move there. How about something in Queens a little closer to LI?
Floral Park or Bellerose?

Just wanted to say...I grew up in Glendale...on 64th Lane! Where are you located?

Honestly...I'd stay in Glendale...it's much better than south Ozone Park, for sure!

Wow, Im really close to where you grew up. Im on 67th street/myrtle Ave.
If I were to stay in Glendale I would want to move to upper Glendale... like the 70's ad 80's just b/c it quieter and Im looking for a 2 family house not a big building like im in now. I like Glendale BUT im having such a hard time finding a landlord who will allow us to have a washer/dryer... with a baby coming Im really adamant about having it!! Pray I find something around here!!Chat Icon

I wish!!! But my husband works in downtown Brooklyn and it would be a really bad commute for him. We need something in Queens near the A train, the F, something like that.

I'm in Queens but not that area; as for the washer/dryer you *might* try to offer an extra few dollars in your security deposit to cover any potential flooding, etc. That's why most L/Ls won't allow it, God forbid there's a flood and the damage becomes their responsibility to fix (they often preclude fish tanks from rentals for the same reason).

Thats a good idea... we tried something along those lines, we offered to pay an extra $25 a month as an incentive but some still say no, the ones that said yes the apartment itself was a dump and I didnt like Chat Icon

I find that those BIG building, the elevator buildings, have washer/dryers in the basement for the tenants to use... we've seen a couple of apartments in those type of building but they are in neighborhoods that are REALLY hard to find parking, and they parking garage they offer is $150 a month!! For example Im going to see what looks like a BEATIFUL apt. in forest hills on friday and its in our budget ($1400) BUT there is literally no where to park in the street and with the garage fee ... BAM its out of our budget.

Re: Queens Girls-- Please Advise on this neighborhood!!

Street parking in Queens is like a city-sponsored torture program. I'm in Astoria which is consistently the WORST. We're in between cars right now Chat Icon and honestly do not miss the alternate side crap and the inevitable tickets!!
Forest Hills is so awesome though and would have everything you need neighborhood wise.
I'm in a 2family house with no washer/dryer; we have multiple laundromats nearby, it's actually not that bad when the baby is little, they sleep all the time and you can get it done no problem. The toddler stage is HORRIBLE for landromats they want to run freeeeeee not sit in the stroller Chat Icon I do about 80% of our clothes after DS is out for the night and dh is home; for the rest the places near me all do free pickups AND deliveries, I just tip the guy a few bucks and its done. So maybe that will help you keep an open mind if you see the right place but can't get the ok for a w/d!

Yea Astoria is really hard for parking!! When I go there to eat we always curse ourselves about the parking lol. I really hate NYC cause of this!! Where I live in Glendale there is alt. side parking but its not really a problem to ever find a spot 1-2 blocks away from the apartment.

My husband is saying what your saying... if we find the perfect apartment but it has no w/d we should take it... I guess your both right, esp. since we have no time to be picky ( our lease is up end of june). IM just worried cause honestly my husband and I are very bad when it comes to laundry, we do it once every three weeks and I know we wont be able to do that when the baby comes!! I dont want to be in the laundrymat 2X week. He promises he'll do it but I doubt that lol. Chat Icon

Im going to see three apartments in Upper Glendale this friday as well so wish us luck that one if them is the right one!!Chat Icon

Re: Queens Girls-- Please Advise on this neighborhood!!

Awww good luck, I'm sure you'll find one!!!!

And if it helps I was nervous about laundry too, but the truth is when they're so new you really don't do that much laundry!!!! They're not mobile yet so their cute little outfits stay pretty clean!!! Sure there willl be spit up and maybe a poop situation but there's actually WAYYYYYYY more laundry later once they're crawling, running, climbing!!! So if you find the right pad TAKE IT!!!
If you make the laundry DH's job from the INStANT you move in that's even better so he'll be well-trained when Chat Icon gets here Chat Icon
GOOD LUCK!!!Chat Icon

Not mine either but my husband has to go to downtown brooklyn for work everyday so we need something around a subway.

Believe me I lived in the best area of Bayside in a family house before I got married, so no.. this is not my ideal area.

Middle Village - Q38 to Queens Center, Q67 to Queens Plaza.. or M Train

Maspeth (MV border) --- Q67 to Queens Plaza, Q 58 (?) to Queens Blvd

Forest Hills -- LIRR, E, F, R, V trains, plus tons of buses
