QOTD 1/11/11
How cool is that date btw?
On the celebrity board it was mentioned that the Beckhams used gender selection in their 4th pregnancy to have a baby girl (they have three boys)
Would you do this? What is your opinion of this?

No I wouldn't do this. I think it goes against nature's natural selection process. I think it is tempting fate. IMO it is morally and ethically wrong.

I Agree. I have to crash because this is a topic I feel so strongly against. Not only do I think it's total bs but it just isn't right to me. There are so many people just struggling to get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy. The gender should be the furthest from anyones worries. It's sad that there are so many people struggling with ttc while others actually care so much about gender.

Re: QOTD 1/11/11
DH's cousin married into a big greek family. They had to have the little boy to carry on the family name. well, 5 children later they had 5 girls! So they decided to have one more kid and guarantee it would be a boy with gender selection. I guess its pretty expensive to do, but they have a boatload of money.
I always found it strange. I feel like I would be so worried that you are messing with nature and that the kid would end up having something wrong with him. Luckily, he was perfectly normal but I still don't think I could take that risk.

Re: QOTD 1/11/11
I couldn't do it, it's just not for me. I have seen other procedures where they're able to remove genes from a fetus that can cause certain diseases like alzheimers. I would be more interested in something like that than gender selection. But even then, I'm sure they don't know about the possible long term effects since this stuff is relatively new.
Totally off topic but I just noticed this little guy Love it!

This like the Japanese royal family, where they had to have a male heir or else the throne would go to a distant relative or something.. and then the second wife's 40 year old wife got pregnant with a boy since the Crown Princess couldn't have another kid (I think).

I wouldn't do it.. but if I had three boys or three girls, and I wanted another one, I would try the Shettles method but nothing other than that..

Personally I can't see DH and I doing this.
So long as the baby is not harmed I do not think it is my place to judge another couple for doing it, everyone has their reasons for doing things and this is where the corny saying "to each their own" rings true for me.

I agree. I know I wouldn't be in this situation, but I might consider it if I had a few kids of the same gender and wanted another one. I see it as a technological advance like IVF and I don't think it's wrong or unethical... people could say that IVF is messing with nature, but think of all the beautiful families that result from this and how much happiness it has given people.

Re: QOTD 1/11/11
... we have every intention of using the Shettles method to 'try' for boys.
If we have girls that's okay too but I am such a tomboy ... I was never into pink and dolls and all that stuff.
I just feel like I would be better matched with boy children.
But, LOL, if we have girls I guess I'll just have to step it up and learn how to fix little girl hair and do braids and play with pink stuff.
I would never pay money to do that gender selection thing. It's like thousands of dollars. But -- LOL that's because I'm poor.
Ask me again if I hit the Mega Millions in ten years and want to add a daughter to my litter of boys.

I wouldn't pay, even if I was rich.
Not going to lie though, I'm trying to naturally conceive a boy. I won't cry if it doesn't work though. lol.
and I'm a tomboy too. I'd need lessons on how to handle little girls. I have only babysat boys.

Re: QOTD 1/11/11
if we were rich i might consider it (but don't think i would want to go through the process since it's like doing IVF) i don't think it is a big deal...this is coming from someone who got pregnant and lost a baby and would give anything to have a healthy pregnancy and baby one day regardless of the gender...but for other people, whatever floats your boat...
the only issue i see with it is if everyone does it than it might skew the ratio of men to women on the earth...for example you could end up with a generation of 3x as many men to women kwim?

yeah its the same process as IVF... except they seperate the sperm before hand and only insert the sperm that has the greatest chance of being male/famale...

Personally, I just want a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby. I have no opinion on those that decided to do it. I do think its testing fate but I dont necessarily think it's morally wrong. To each his own... but for me, I just want a baby. Boy, girl, doesnt matter

Re: QOTD 1/11/11
I don't know. I don't really have an opinion either way. Is it the worst thing in the world to want a particular gender? I don't think so. Should it really matter if you have a boy or a girl? Not really but I could understand being disappointed if you always wanted one or the other. I can't really say if it's something I would actually consider but who knows, if I had 4 boys and desperately wanted a daughter (or vice versa) maybe I would do it. I think it's one of those decisions that you cannot be a 100% about about unless you are faced with the option.
