PVC or wood?
If you could swing it, would you do a PVC over a wood fence?

Re: PVC or wood?
PVC, absolutely. Even with regular maintenance, wood fences fall apart and become an eyesore and dangerous. All the wood fences in my neighborhood are either in bad shape, or recently replaced because they were in bad shape.

so true, but i heard that there is a better made wood fence (steel reinforced) that lasts a lot longer. also, i see the same fences falling apart made of pvc as well. a good installer is really important too.

Re: PVC or wood?
We have PVC and love it.
There is also PVC that looks like wood which is really nice! A lot more money though.

Re: PVC or wood?
Wood over PVC definately.
I think the PVC looks unnatural and it creaks.
also, to those who think wood falls apart and looks like crap, are you comparing nice wood fencing made our of cedar or are you talking about the bargin basement spruce stockade fencing?
installed right, there is no reason why a wood fence should be falling apart.
steel reinforcement has nothing to do with it, PVC needs to be reinforced since it doesn't have significant strength

Re: PVC or wood?
we just got the pvc. I like the way it looks. We got the pvc because there is no space at all in the fence. Our neighbor's kid was trying to dig a hole from his yard to ours to get our dog. The pvc has no room for space or rotting... So pvc was the best choice for us.

Re: PVC or wood?
PVC... looks better over time, less maintenance, cheaper in the long run since you wouldn't need to replace like wood.

Re: PVC or wood?
And steel reinforced from the quotes we got is ONLY a couple of hundred dollars less than PVC. Factor in the maintenance of a wood fence and the cost is the same.

Re: PVC or wood?
I think it's a matter of personal preference.
I had a old wood fence. A lot more maintenance and I feel it's more a "country/woodsy" feeling.
I like the clean look of my white PVC. Nice and clean. Easy to wash and maintain.
But I see nothing wrong with people having a wood fence.
It really depends on taste and if you can stain it every few years to maintain it.

Re: PVC or wood?
I prefer natural materials.. wood or stone. I even like iron. I do not like chain link and I don't care for PVC.
I think wood looks beautiful as it ages. I know that puts me firmly in the minority!!
As to maintenance.. I do think PVC requires maintenance or it turns green and dirty and I find that it breaks more easily than a quality wood fence.

Re: PVC or wood?
I hate the way wood fences look. I'm a big fan of white PVC. I like the crisp clean look of it.

Ditto! We're having a cedar fence installed next week, I can't wait. I'm not a big fan of the PVC look.

I believe you're right - most people think of the spruce or pine stockade when they think of wood fences, not cedar.
Cedar posts last 40 years, panels 10-15 with no maintenance at all (incl initial staining / sealing).

cedar wood (there is a HUGE difference) between cedar and general spruce $20 panel fencing. Not a fan of PVC.

Yes, I have heard this about cedar but then again, it is up there with the cost of PVC, maybe even more. What is boils down to is what is more aesthetically appealing to an individual's taste.

No, I am not a fan of PVC. I would probably do wood even if it is more than PVC.

Re: PVC or wood?
We are going with cedar. I put up PVC at my other house, 13K later the thing cracks and breaks way more than any wood fence I've ever had.

Re: PVC or wood?
oh hell yes because it is maintainence free.
DH LOATHES having to treat and maintain wood. The deck alone is the bane of his existance and he is actually thinking of having it rebuild with Trex to avoid the maintenance.
So on fence- PVC all the way!
