Pumping while going back to work

I have a little time, but I'm curious... does anyone still breastfeed, but manage to get through the whole work day without pumping? Is it even possible? I would love to continue to breastfeed when I do go back to work, but I feel like the whole pumping in the workplace thing is going to be awkward and difficult to do. Anyone out there dealing with this?

I dont work, but I do breastfeed and from everything that I have read, if you dont pump every 2-3 hours, your milk supply will diminish. Your body makes enough milk to feed your baby, and it knows how much from how long/ how many times your baby feeds. If you dont pump, your body will think that your baby doesnt need it, and will thus stop making the milk and you will need to supplement w/ formula. Does this make sense?

I pump at work, but a friend if mine at work nursed her daughter in the morning, evening and night and fed her formula during the workday so it can be done.

Cookiegobbler is right you would need to pump in order to keep up your milk production. However, if you aren't feeding your DC with that milk (if you are formula feeding during the day) then you don't need your milk supply to be up during the day. I've also known people who only BF in the morning & at night and FF during the day. Your body works on the supply and demand theory. It will adjust itself accordingly.

i pumped at work because I was so engorged when I didn't. I'm a teacher so it was easy for my but by law your job has to give you time to pump and a place to do it.

Re: Pumping while going back to work

I didn't pump at work, but I did pump for 8 months exclusively and I was on a 3 times a day pumping schedule, 8 am, 6 pm and 11 pm and I pumped 20+ oz a day. I think the key is to get to a schedule and your body will follow suit.

ie, if you were to feed your baby only 3 times a day, your body would regulate so you would make enough milk to feed your baby...

Does that make sense?
