Pug owners?
Hi all,
My DH and I have been thinking about adopting a dog. This is scary, uncharted territory for me, because I've never owned a dog--I've had about 20 cats over the course of my life and they are pretty much all I know
We have an 11 month-old daughter and a cat who is 2 years old. We are looking for a small breed--my DH has always owned pugs and would like to get another one.
We plan to look into rescue organizations before going to registered breeders.
Can anyone fill me in on what we can expect as far as any special needs, how long they need to be walked, etc?
I'm scared!!! I love my cat because he's pretty much self-sufficient

Good luck! We've been trying to find a dog that is good with both babies and cats from a rescue and are having a very hard time!

Re: Pug owners?
I'm a pug owner with a almost 5 month old who loves the dog now! Otis was our first baby and now Riley!! I also belong to a Pug Rescue group on LI PPRA precious Pug rescue and adoption. If you want I can find a rescue group for you down in NC I believe that is where you live. Image Attachment(s):

Re: Pug owners?
I have 2 pugs. I wouldn't ever get another breed. Besides them being so adorbale, they are great with kids, doesn't need a ton of excercise, great personalities, somewhat easy to train. You should definitely consider one. I couldn't live without mine.

Re: Pug owners?
We have a pug. I can honestly say they are such great dogs. We are considering another. They are great with kids and have great personalities. They are also huge snugglers. I must tell you though that they do shed a lot. Anyway I would recommend this breed to anyone!

Re: Pug owners?
Thanks so much, everyone!
As I said, my DH has always had pugs and LOVES them, but I'm a little scared since I have never had a dog. But it seems like a pug would be a great choice for us.
NoStressBride, I would love some help in finding a rescue organization! We are in NC.
Thanks again, everyone!

Re: Pug owners?
I love my pug! I have always (in my parents home) have had big dogs, and this was DH's first and it was a great decision.

Ditto on all counts. They are hyper when they are puppies so be warned. Also they are notorious for skin problems, shedding and breathing issues.

Re: Pug owners?
Not to be a negative nelly here, but are you ready for pee and poo all over again in your house? B/c puppies can take a long time to train and will have many accidents. And they are a LOT LOT LOT of work. I used to cry when I got my dog at first, he was exhausting. Now having 2 dogs and a baby, I am wiped out. Dogs require so much more attention than cats. Our dogs are my first dogs, always had cats. And dogs are like toddlers, that's their mentality.
So make sure you are ready for this, b/c some dogs don't train so quickly. I was taking my female out 12 times a day (she had a bladder problem for her first year and sometimes still). And she still had issues with control.
So just keep this in mind, expect the dog to act like a small child. They are nothing like cats. Much more attention needing and less self sufficient.

I totally agree with every word of this..
Read through this pet board and look at how many people with newborns and kids want to re home there pets because of poop and pee.. Oh and barking!!!! Bad idea Beth.. Sorry.
ETA: they are also a financial burden.. especially if he ends up with issues like skin problems.. I spend thousands on Lola's allergy problems! Her special food alone is a fortune.. If you plan on getting a dog make sure you can afford this as well.. Its very hard now that my DH is unemployed.
