PSA: H1N1 vaccine recalled
here is the story from newsday:
CDC recalling 800,000 doses of swine flu vaccine
ATLANTA - Health officials are recalling hundreds of thousands of doses of H1N1 flu vaccine after tests indicated they may not be potent enough to protect against the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified doctors about the recall Tuesday. The recall involves about 800,000 doses made by Sanofi Pasteur. The doses are pre-filled syringes intended for young children, ages 6 months to almost three years.
Health officials recommend children those ages get two doses, spaced about a month apart.
Health officials say it's not clear how many doses have already been given, but they don't think children need to be revaccinated.
The lots passed potency tests when they were first shipped, but tests indicate the potency waned after.

So there was nothing 'bad' except that it was ineffective, right?

My concern is...so they are saying...
I dont need this BS. I really dont. I am so mad at myself, my DD getting a shot full of chemicals that probably did squat....
this was exactly ONE of my concerns.
So that's it. I am done. No more for her. Wish I could take it back.

Just the thought of my child getting chemcials shot into her, without any likely helpful outcome...that is highly upsetting...kwim?

It said may not. That isn't definitive enough for me...
Do you know for sure she got one from this batch?

I totally get what you are saying, but just breathe for now. They are only recalling 800,000 doses and they are not even sure yet that these doses were sent to clininc/drs in NY. So it could still be a moot point. Did you DC get the pre-measured syringe does?

Oh geez....this is probably why his first shot caused a reaction and his second didn't.
I know his first wasn't prefilled...not sure about second at all.

I dont know. Put a call in to the peds.
Even if it's not this batch, I would not be surprised if many of the vaccines fall into this situation.
And I am pretty sure it's from this...based on the timing. I would take a darn good guess to say yes.
But either way, I bet many of the vaccines may be doing this...dwindling in response after time. Such is the way a new vaccine goes.
So sorry I took the gamble.

Im not following, why would the fact that the effectiveness of the shot dwindling mean it caused a reaction in your DC? Just curious if Im missing something to the story?

Yes. Prefilled. And the timing of when my drs office got the vaccine coincides with this...so I am going to say its that batch.
Also, our drs office only got 400 doses. Out of 800,000, it's a good chance its that lot.
I am DONE. I am mad at myself beyond words. I should have went with my gut to NOT get it all along b/c this possibility was not lost on me.

i think you are being really hard on yourself. I think you made the best decision you could given the information presented and available to you. You did what you thought was right with the knowledge you had. Your DC is OK, yes, the shot may turn out to not be as effective, but she is OK. Dont be so hard on yourself.

I think what Goobster is just saying is that she got her the vaccine because she thought it was the right thing to do... but now she's learning that there's a good chance it was filled with chemicals and preservatives with no positive effect on the body. That would frustrate me too

Im not following, why would the fact that the effectiveness of the shot dwindling mean it caused a reaction in your DC? Just curious if Im missing something to the story? I think effectiveness would be directly related to the amount of the virus in the vaccine (not sure how these things work, if the virus is live or not...)
So in essence, maybe more virus = effective vaccine = reaction to shot? That's only my theory, not based in science or medicine or anything.

Re: PSA: H1N1 vaccine recalled
Upon reading some additional articles I do not think it is a cause for concern. The levels dropped only slightly below what they should be. Since children need to receive 2 shots anyway - it seems that even if they got both shots from that lot they would still be fully protected (according to the CDC).
As to why a child may have a reaction the first time and not the second - the first shot "primes" your immune system so when you get the booster it already "recognizes" the virus.

yeah, i have no idea how it works...I am okay with him getting shot...just my luck if his first shot was okay and effective...maybe that's why he had such a strong reaction

It was certain lot#'s, chances are your dc didn't receive that batch. 800,000 sounds like a lot but it's really not when you consider the FDA ordered 195 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine. If you want to read more information about it check out this link below.

I'm confused-- Sasha needs two shots of both seasonal and h1N1 anyway.
