PSA: going off BCP

I just went to a new gyno and discussed this with her. She said that when you go off the pill, your body does not need to "regulate" and it's a common misconception that you do.

The reason for why your cycle may change is that your body changes during the time that you are on the pill. When you are on BCP, you are regular so you are unaware of these changes. When you go off the pill, your cycles will just be what they would be, if you are not regulated by the pill.

For most of us-- if you have gone off the pill recently (for TTC or otherwise), there is a good chance that you have been on the pill for several years-- a lot can happen in that time frame. Some women will continue to be like clockwork-- whatever their clock is.. and others, will have to get to know a whole new cycle. Just another joy of being a woman!

Thanks for the clarification...My doctor told me the same thing. Your body just needs to get use to what it is now.

I've had two doctors tell me it can take anywhere up to a year for your body to regulate... my sister included (she's a Dr.)

I think maybe the truth lies between what your doctor says and what many other doctors may say. I was like clockwork, down the day and time AF would come before I was on BCP. I was also on BCP, for a very short time, and have not been regular since coming off it in August. I do think and believe that my body is regulating itself, as my past two cycles have been the same number of days (albeit, LONG ...45 days), but consistent nonethe less.

Re: PSA: going off BCP

That is good to hear. My Dr told me anywhere between 6 months to a year to get back to normal. But she did say, when I asked her about the breakouts and weight gain I was experiencing after coming off of the BCP, that my body is going back to what it would have been without all the hormones from the pill. So I guess that would stand true with your cycles as well. Thanks for the info.Chat Icon That is really helpful.

Re: PSA: going off BCP

There is a bit of truth to what your GYN said. Being on the BCP is forced regulation of a period. When you go off of a BCP, it doesnt necessarily mean that your periods are going to be textbook 28 days. The bottom line is that the pill masks what you would be if you didnt take it. Each doctor chooses a different phraseology, but I do not under any circumstances think there is a universal for everyone.
