Why can't more people live the way Jesus actually lived, rather than use him name to spread hatred?
Exactly. Whatever happened to JUDGE NOT??? Apparently some people think they know better. It is a shame the message got lost

That's such a shame.
I'm happy that CT voters rejected the proposal on holding a constitutional convention, which could've been used to overturn the CT Supreme Court's ruling that banning same sex marriage is unconstitutional.
Definitely voted no on the constitutional convention. The only one who really wanted it was surprise, surprise Gov. Rell. I'm glad other voters felt the same way.
So sad about Cali.

it just seems so strange to me that such a highly democratic state would pass this proposition - it is ridiculous that this passed.
I know...I am shocked
I really am shocked that California, of all places, would pass.
Remember that California elected Schwartzenegger as their Republican governor. They also gave us Nixon and Reagan.

Re: Proposition 8 in Cali passed!
I wonder what will happen to the couples married during the time when they want a divorce
if gay marriage is not legal then divorce is not necessary but they are legally married
this is an issue for gay couples married in MA that live in RI

If the proposition is not retroactive (which it does not appear to be) then it does not affect same sex couples who got married before Nov. 4. If they want to get divorced, they'll go through the same process as everyone else in CA.

Its sad, cause look at traditional marriage the divorce rate is sky high, you have husbands who murder their wives, and you have men and women who cheat in their marriages
I dont know what is so special about saving a traditional marriage when it is so obviously tainted

very good point.

DH and I saw an ad a few times urging people to vote "yes" for the convention. It was sponsored by a Catholic organization, but I don't remember the exact name.
I think the ad urging people to vote "no" and listing the reasons why was effective b/c I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have known what question #1 was about.

Re: Proposition 8 in Cali passed!
Here is an article how the voting broke down.
LOS ANGELES — Voters put a stop to same-sex marriage in California, dealing a crushing defeat to gay-rights activists in a state they hoped would be a vanguard, and putting in doubt as many as 18,000 same-sex marriages conducted since a court ruling made them legal this year.
The gay-rights movement had a rough election elsewhere as well Tuesday. Ban-gay-marriage amendments were approved in Arizona and Florida, and Arkansas voters approved a measure banning unmarried couples from serving as adoptive or foster parents. Supporters made clear that gays and lesbians were their main target.
But California, the nation’s most populous state, had been the big prize. Spending for and against Proposition 8 reached $74 million, the most expensive social-issues campaign in U.S. history and the most expensive campaign this year outside the race for the White House. Activists on both sides of the issue saw the measure as critical to building momentum for their causes.
“People believe in the institution of marriage,” Frank Schubert, co-manager of the Yes on 8 campaign said after declaring victory early Wednesday. “It’s one institution that crosses ethnic divides, that crosses partisan divides. ... People have stood up because they care about marriage and they care a great deal.”
With almost all precincts reporting, election returns showed the measure winning with 52 percent. Some provisional and absentee ballots remained to be tallied, but based on trends and the locations of the votes still outstanding, the margin of support in favor of the initiative was secure.
Exit polls for The Associated Press found that Proposition 8 received critical support from black voters who flocked to the polls to support Barack Obama for president. Blacks voted strongly in favor of the ban, while whites narrowly opposed it and Latinos and Asians were split.
Californians overwhelmingly passed a same-sex marriage ban in 2000, but gay-rights supporters had hoped public opinion on the issue had shifted enough for this year’s measure to be rejected.
“We pick ourselves up and trudge on,” said Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “There has been enormous movement in favor of full equality in eight short years. That is the direction this is heading, and if it’s not today or it’s not tomorrow, it will be soon.”
The constitutional amendment limits marriage to heterosexual couples, nullifying the California Supreme Court decision that had made same-sex marriages legal in the state since June.
Similar bans had prevailed in 27 states before Tuesday’s elections, but none were in California’s situation — with about 18,000 gay couples already married. The state attorney general, Jerry Brown, has said those marriages will remain valid, although legal challenges are possible.

Re: Proposition 8 in Cali passed!
What sickens me is here we are celebrating an historic election with our first African American president and tooting our "everyone's equal now" horns, yet, there's still this underlying current of inequality. Why in hell does anyone care about what goes on in other people's bedrooms? And why in hell would religious beliefs on marriage have ANYTHING to do with gay marriage when it's NOT a religious issue, it's a legal issue. Whatever happened to separation of church and state? I'm so incredibly disgusted by this country on a day that I should feel so proud. My best friend was planning his wedding for next summer in California, and now, it looks like it's off I'm so sick to my stomach.

I have a ridiculous question....for those who had weddings planned...what is going to happen to them? I mean I know they cannot get legally married, but I would think that there were a ton of venues and dates booked, and now they cannot have "official" weddings. Do these folks have any recourse for cancellations if they do not want to have just a "civil union?"

Re: Proposition 8 in Cali passed!
I'm totally disgusted from a human rights/equality issue, but even just looking at it from a purely financial angle, it's dumb turning it down.
How many millions of dollars would be pumped into the CA economy (and tax coffers) by allowing a large number of couples to get married? Catering halls, photographers, dress/tux makers, jewelers, florists, etc, etc.
I hope that people who voted against gay marriage are happy when their taxes go up, and jobs are lost because the economy took another significant hit....

I doubt it. Their contracts with the venues aren't contingent upon the laws regarding gay marriage.

Re: Proposition 8 in Cali passed!
My friend who lives in Cali said it best: "a reminder in one night of how far we've come, yet not there yet."
I agree with Stinkysmom- its heterosexuals with a 50% divorce rate that have destroyed the "sanctity of marriage".
Here is a hopeful way to look at it. 50 years ago, being "gay" was akin to be a child molestor. It was considered to be a sexual deviant- cause for imprisonment. It was something so shameful that people hid that part of their lives.
Only in the 70's and 80's did people really start to talk about homosexuality in the mainstream. When AIDS came out and hit the gay community hard, mroe and more people started coming out of the closet.
In the '90s people started talking more and more about the emotional aspects of coming out. There were support groups in colleges and HS and communities to support those "struggling" or just dealing with their own homosexuality. People came out of the closet. TV shows started having gay characters: Melrose Place, Will and Grace, etc...
And now, most people know SOMEONE who is gay. Many gay people are out and proud and living thier normal lives just the rest of us. I like to think there are a lot fewer people in the closet then 20 years ago.
And social acceptance of gays is also on the rise. Domestic partnership benefits are becoming more common, as are civil unions.
While gays haven't acheived total equality yet, in the last thirty years they have swelled from a small public community to a large community permeating every social, economic and cultural community.
I have faith that this country will move forward towards justice and equality. Laws banning interracial marriage were only repealed in the 40's and 50's. Segretation ended only 54 years ago, and now we have a black President-elect. Our progress towards equality is moving exponentially. I hope that by the time my daughter is grown, gay marriage will be as common as any other marriage.
Lets focus on how far we have come, and what we can do to make sure everyone has the right to marry.

But what if they have a marriage license, but haven't actually gotten maried yet. Are those weddings invalid now too?

I'll bet the wording on the Cali proposition was hard to understand as well.
I'd be surprised if that was the reason, only because it had gotten so much publicity form both both sides.
As for the NY proposition about veteran rights & civil service exams, I do try & find out what they are ahead of time, b/c reading that tiny print & trying to decide on the spot about an isuse you are nor familiar with is too stressful.

I was confused about what the proposition meant as well. I looked it up ahead of time and had my dad who is a vet explained it to me. He said it was good for the vets so I voted yes.

I read in several places that there was lots of confusion over the wording of the bill and the campaigns leading up to the vote. Voting NO for Proposition 8 meant voting in favor of gay marriage, not the opposite. There was lots of Yes on 8 propaganda and some fear it confused the voters

THat is what I was thinking. I have to say when I read the subject of this post I thought it meant they made gay marriage LEGAL. It wasn't until I opened it that I realized what it actually meant

Nope not hard to read at all! there was plenty of information and it was pretty well know state wide.
If the same people were smart enough to vote for the candidate of their choice, then they were smart enough to vote the prop. the way they saw fit.
Both Obama and McCain said they defined marriage as a union between a man and a women. I'm sure that had alot of influence on how they voted.
I am totally stunned myself it passed as I have the idea we should all live and let live. I too always thought Cali was more progressive in their thinking then this.
Read the article I posted and it will show you how the vote broke down.
