Product of our environment?
In the past two months:
--a friend has been diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma --my cousin is in endstage Ovarian Cancer --a friend's newborn baby was born with rare benign tumors underneath his tongue (he will be trached for 2 years at least) --my 4 year old niece spent a week in the hospital with unexplained severe anemia and walking pneumonia.
I am sorry, but these are pretty crazy things happening to people...are we doing it to ourselves???? Are we slowly killing ourselves???

Re: Product of our environment?
I am worried that these diseases are coming from our environment/food supply etc.

I don't think it's a coincidence at all - I truly believe it's our environment. In my home growing up, my dog died of cancer, my cat died of cancer, and then my mother got breast cancer, with no history of cancer in the family. Coincidence? Definiitely not. I was just reading an article today on CNN about these poor immigrant kids in Cali who go to school next to an orange grove. One day a cloud of pesticides blew over, and the kids playing in the yard all literally fell over in spasms and started vomiting. This is exactly why we gave up meat and try to eat as organic as possible, but then again, there's really only so much you can do.
It's sickening to me to think of all the industries that are literally getting away with murder.
I'm so sorry for your family

Re: Product of our environment?
Definitely something is up...in the past week my friends 18 month old nephew had his intestines collapse suddenly which required emergency surgery and he is still in the hospital
My SIL's father was just diagnosed with non hodgkins
I believe the environment is playing a huge role

Re: Product of our environment?
I think its two things:
1. The environment and
2. The chemicals that we injest.
We drink so much soda (chemicals) sugar substitutes/diet drinks (chemicals). Our meat and dairy are pumped with hormones so that we get bigger eggs, milk that lasts longer and bigger pieces of meat. Our fruits and veggies are sprayed with pesticides and then other chemicals ot make them shiny in the grocery and to keep them from spoiling.
I think we have stepped so far from a eating and drinking natural products, and so many people are getting sicker, younger. I think it has to be a part of it.

my dad had non hodgkins 6 years ago and hes doing great now... you would never know hed been through anything if you saw him today... when he was diagnosed, the doctor told him that non hodgkins used to be the "bad" one, but they are actually pretty similar now with the way medicines are, if you catch them early enough... but still, its so sad! and i definitely think our environment is causing some of it... the world is way to overpopulated, and we're depending way to much on unhealthy things... that can't be good in the long run

Re: Product of our environment?
to your friends and family....and to you!
I agree with Shellys post, I definitely think there is an environmental link as well as what we put directly into or on our bodies. So many things you don't think twice about are made of chemicals. I have even been second guessing my hand/body lotion addiction (although looking into alternatives). Your skin is your largest organ, chemicals seep through right into your body. I can go on, I really have been thinking alot about this lately... I lost my brother to Hodgkins Lymphoma (no other cancer in my family history), and seems I am hearing about it even more lately.

Re: Product of our environment?
being that I lost my mom to the "bad" lymphoma
she didn't eat red meat, worked out everyday, and drank alot of water
almost everyone I knew in my old neighborhood had a wife with cancer
out of 4 couples my parents included
3 of the 4 wives had cancer before 50- and my Mom was gone by 53
I don't drink tap water - Jake wont let me
after my Mom got sick- she hated the taste of water-
IMO- it's enviromental

Re: Product of our environment?
While I definitely think that environment aids in the development of cancer, couldn't you also contribute it's growing numbers to advancement in technology - that medicine just did not detect it before? That people either were dying before it was diagnosed or the doctors just missed it because they did not have the mechanisms to know what it was? Just food for thought......

Re: Product of our environment?
its a combo of better tests & what we have done to our planet. Autism rates have skyrocketted, kids being born with severe food allergies are common now. Cancer is EVERYWHERE. we need to take control, we can't fix the world but as one of the most educated, wealthy countries we can fix our food supply. Maybe not in our lifetime, but at least we can get it on track for the next generations. Silly things we (as a society) have done, like needing a perfectly green, weed free lawn....why? We drink the water under our lawns on LI, how on Earth did anyone ever tink it would be good to put all those chemicals on our grass? Stop making so much waste, our great grandchildren will need to learn to build their McMansions out of all the empty Poland Spring Bottles we left for them. There is a really great, old book called Silent Spring by Rachel Carson...if you want to be inspired to change your life, read it.

Re: Product of our environment?
although I believe that we have manipulated our enviroment so much that it does effect our health...I also believe that we are no worse off than the people of the past, who experienced much more child illness and death at birth than we do. Our life expectancy is much longer...so even though of enviroment has a negative effect on us...we still are survining longer, and are easlly cured from things that we death sentences 100 yrs ago

One thing I have been wondering a lot about lately- Do you think that autism rates have skyrocketed or just the diagnoses have?
