Prilosec??
Hello again ladies, I am only 7 weeks pregnant and was wondering if I was able to take prescription Prilosec 40mg (omeprazole). I was taking it for about 2 years before I got pregnant and then stopped when I found out I was...I am suffering with acid and morning (ALL DAY) sickness and am hoping if I go back on it may help me...Is this safe?? I am so scared to take anything. HELP

Re: Prilosec??
definitely ask your doctor. from what i've read omeprazole is not safe from pregnancy. my doc prescribed me nexium, which is different.

Re: Prilosec??
My OB didn't want me on it, wanted me to try other things (pepcid, tums, gaviscon, etc).
It was an awful 2 weeks or so of trying other things. I barely slept because the acid feeling would wake me up.
Since nothing was working, they wanted me to see a gastro which I did.
I was prescribed protonix (pantaprozole) and it's been great. Works for me just as well as prilosec did.
If you want the name of the gastro I went to, just FM me.

Re: Prilosec??
I have GERD and a heital hernia. I was on nexium for a long time however once I was pregnant I stopped it completely. Try gaviscon...it really does help (not as well as prescription meds) alleviate the acid much better than tums. However, double check with your doctor first.

Re: Prilosec??
I think it's one of those the benifits out weight the risks drugs. I have HORRIBLE gerd and have stayed on 40mg of Prilosec in the morning and 150mg Zantac at betime. If not I vomit all day/night and the heartburn is to bad to handle. It's from my ra meds and for me the benifits out weigh the risks, plus eating 20 tums w/no relief is not good either. I have tried Nexium, Protonix, and all the others with this being the only thing to help.

Re: Prilosec??
Hi Lindi, Have you been on it throughout your entire pregnancy? I don't know what to do. I am so scared to take anything! Tums only make me feel worse.

Yup. I started at 20mg of Prilosec about 5yrs ago and when I was pg with my daughter I had HORRIBLE night hb and threw up even more then normal. After I had her they upped my meds to 40mg Prilosec in the morning and then over the counter zantac 150mg at night 1/2hr before bed. It was like night and day!!! I have been on this for over 2yrs now and did not change it once pg. I have a lot of damage to my throat and my teeth from all the throwing up in my 1st pg. Like I said, for me, the benifits of the meds 100% out weigh the risks of me not being on it. I was sacred too, but without them or even missing a dose I am up all night sick or unable to eat anything. I tried cutting out foods and all that, but EVERYTHING causes hb for me even water! It's not just heartburn for me it's the GERD. Every doc is different so talk to yours and see what they want you to do, but for me it was a life saver. Also when I was pg w/Emmy and it was bad bad bad I would drink pickle juice. Weird I know, but it gave me minor relief as did water with some baking powder.

Re: Prilosec??
Thank you soooo much! I have acid reflux and chronic erosive gastritis. No matter What I eat I feel sick. I know that morning (more like all day and night) sickness is a part of pregnancy but I think mine Is worse cause I stopped taking my omeprazole so abruptly. The Dr told me I could stay on it but I am still nervous to take it.

TAKE IT!!!!!! If he knows and says take it...TAKE IT!!! This isn't just standard run of the mill 2 tums will help pregnancy hb, and if gerd or anything else is left untreated it can cause esophogeal(?) verices(?) You DO NOT want that!

Re: Prilosec??
I know. Lol. I think on going to start trying to take some zantac first and if that doesn't work I will do the omeprazole. Pregnancy seems to make my tummy worse...it doesn't help I am on Prometrium.
