What is the difference between Prilosec and Zantac?
My DS has acid reflux and is currently on Zantac. I really don't know if it is working 100%. He still seems so uncomfortable during the middle of the night and early morning. I keep hearing Prilosec might be better. Any suggestions?

Re: What is the difference between Prilosec and Zantac?
Zantac SUCKS!!!!!!
My GI specialist says that it is SUPER innefective for reflux in babies. He doesn't understand why pediatricians keep pushing it (probably has something to do with the pharmaceutical company)
Alexa was WIRED on zanatac and it made her reflux worse. And interesting side note, Zantac is flavored peppermint and people with reflux are advised to STAY AWAY form mint flavored things
Her GI Dr. started her on Prevacid and she was NOTICABLY different after the first dose and a COMPLETELY different baby after a week on it!

Re: What is the difference between Prilosec and Zantac?
Zantac made my DD worse also. We were switched to Axid and it took care of her issues. My second DD is now on Axid as well and it is working for her.
I don't have any info on Prilosec.
On a side note - the Zantac was prescribed to us by a GI specialist. I didn't like him and ended up switching - when we switched we went to Axid.

Re: What is the difference between Prilosec and Zantac?
Hey just crashing w/ some info
Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor vs Zantac which is an H2 Blocker. They are 2 different types of medicine that works 2 different ways. Zantac is great is you have bad heartburn now and need to get rid of it. Prilosec causes the stomach not to produce so much acid in the first place...which is more effective for long-term use. Usually is a person is having a bad case of reflux they will provide zantac until the symptoms subside, but then once they do they will put them on a drug like prilosec (or acifex, etc). Zantac is good for the short term...BUT drugs like that have a tendancy to have rebound effects (meaning, when the body produces acid again, it will actually produce more than it did before you took it). Many proton pump inhibitors also help heal the damaging effects reflux has on the lining of the esophagus (not 100% sure if this is true with Prilosec specificly, but most PPI's do work that way). PPI's do not have the rebound effect that H2's have. Prilosec does have side effects though, but they probably weight risk vs benefit. In the long run a PPI would be better.

As an adult who has taken Zantac in the past...I thought this was interesting too. I think they market it as the cool burst that calms the fire in your chest...that type of thing. However, you are 100% correct. Mint is not recommended for reflux. I think it was a poorly thought of marketing glitch.
