Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
Since I got pregnant, my acid reflux has been horrible. My health insurance stopped covering Nexium on Jan. 1st. And a 30 day prescription costs over 200 dollars. I called the insurance company and they told me that Prilosec is just like Nexium. Has anyone used Prilosec after using Nexium? Does it work like Nexium. I was giving Aciphex but it doesn't work quite as well. Right now I take 2 aciphex pills and one Zantac 150 a day to get through my issues. I was taking Nexium up until May and then started to take Aciphex. After 2 weeks on that, I ended up in the ER with an infammed esophogus. Anyone with any information will be great. Thanks.

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I was on Prilosec for a few months several years ago before I was on Nexium. For me, Prilosec does not compare! I had issues with it- still didn't help my reflux/stomach pain and I was bloated like a stuffed fish. Not fun. I have been on Nexium 40mg for almost 12 years and it is a lifesaver. I sincerely hope it works great for you, but it did nothing but aggrevate me!

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
I am hesitant with buying it. I was on Nexium for 7 years and it was a life saver. Now I am suffering day and night. Nexium is the only thing out there that works for me. Th doctor told me that Aciphex would work just as well. Boy was he wrong. I can't afford to pay for the Nexium now. Out of picket a 90 day supply would cost me over 500 dollars. There is got to be something out there that works.

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
I know what you mean, sista!! I tried Prevacid first, then Prilosec and then Nexium. I think Nexium was new to the market then but I didn't care. My throat was literally on fire when I drank water! I have reflux and an ulcer. I would die if my Nexium wasn't covered! Honestly, I would try the Prilosec. It may work!! Cross your fingers and toes, and try them! I hope I'm in the minority and it works for you. I mean, it's gotta work for someone out there... since they still sell it!!

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
I was told Prilosec is class C and not safe for pregnancy. My dr. prescribed Prevacid instead and its class B so its safer. See if you can get that.
My co pay is $40 but its helped quite a bit with the reflux issues!

I have acid reflux and an esophogeal ulcer...I will look into Prilosec and Prevacid. I remember being on Prevacid when I was a teenager, it didn't do much...I am hoping after Jr. makes his appearance in October, things will settle down a bit.

I don't think you can take prilosec while pregnant. I know I could not take it while BF

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium are all PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) which inhibit acid production in the stomach. All of these drugs have not been tested during pregnacy so no one is 100% sure of their safety. From experience, I know that Nexium did not cause problems with my pregnancy or my DD.

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
I ♥ Nexium, but my insurance will not cover it either. Prilosec is notr as good but I found taking 2 pills a day is just as good, and I take 2 tums before bed. My heartburn has been fine and my OB/GYN said everything was A-Ok with being pregnant and taking it...

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
Pre-pregnancy, I had been through most of them: Zantac, Aciphex, Prevacid, Prilosec, Nexium, and finally Zegrid. Zegrid was working really well for me. It's similar to Nexium but it also has sodium bicarb in it, which did wonders for me for some reason. Unfortunately, the OB wouldn't allow me to take any of them during my last pregnancy or this pregnancy. However, once I deliver I'm immediately going back on Zegrid while BF'ing (got the GI's approval in advance).
During my last pregnancy, I didn't start my Nexium back right away after I delivered and the pain was awful. Awful to the point that it stopped me in my tracks and I couldn't walk. Once the Nexium had kicked back in, the heartburn pain went away for the most part.

Re: Nexium vs Prilosec for acid reflux
before nexxium came on the market - i always used prilosec. the issue is that it takes TIME for it to work - but it DOES work. it has to build in your system....so know that.
also make sure it's cleared from your doc - mine said NO to nexxium...
