price to re-do a (small) bathroom?

a coworker is looking to re-do his bathroom. He lives in a co-op so the bathroom is pretty small.

he's getting everything new in there (toilet, sink, tub etc) including demolishing and adding tile to the wall (just half-way). He's sticking with mostly basic things except for a jaqcuizi tub which is his one real splurge.

He was quoted $15,000 Chat Icon - is it just me or does that sound like he's getting ripped off?! Chat Icon

he hasn't booked this contractor yet and will get a second opinion first, but i was hoping i'd be able to help him find out if that's a normal price or not.

TIA

price to re-do a (small) bathroom?

That is insane!!!!! I was thinking a small co-op bathroom would be closer to $6K. Definitely price around.

We did our DIY completely gutted for under $2000.

$15k is insane.

DH said its prob not too far off actually. If you're dealing with a co-op, most times the walls are plaster which makes demo a lot longer. You have to deal with other fees and removal of everything could be harder than just out of a house.
And he said for him to check to make sure he can have a jacuzzi tub in his co-op because DH has dealt with some crazy boards that don't allow certain things. He said def could run him 10-15k easy

He should ask his maintenance office if some of the guys do side work like a total reno.
They are the best guys to work with because they know all the quirks of the apartments.

price to re-do a (small) bathroom?

We just redid our bathroom. DH did the demo, electric, new studs in the walls, toilet, vanity, tub, fixtures, everything but the tiling, and we paid about 6k, so I can only imagine what it would have been if someone came in and did it. It's not a big bathroom either.

Thanks everyone! The contractor my coworker spoke with is definitely over-charging him ...

he even said something about the fact that his estimate is a low-end estimate and that he usually runs over that by about 30%.

He also said it was $11k for parts and labor, and the other $4k for materials. if the $11k is PARTS and labor, why is there an additional fee for more parts?!

the contractor is definitely a thief. Co-worker will get more estimates.

Thanks everyone! Chat Icon

I don't thing that is too far off, actually. I was planning mine( but didn't get to the quote stage), and budgeted 12K, based on talking to other people. The parts are probably pipes, connections, little things. The 4K is proabably the fixtures.

It sounds a little high, but they may be because of the jacuzzi. He dould get 2 or 3 estimates and compare.

That is over priced. My brother is a gc and he just did our bathroom which is fairly small for 4k and that was with his labor included.

That seems a bit high. We paid $12K to completely remodel our 5x8 bathroom. That included tile all the way up to the ceiling with glass tile border and pencil rail, custom marble vanity, conversion of radiator to baseboard heater, labor, tub, toilet, etc.

price to re-do a (small) bathroom?

We were just quoted a little over 10k for our very small bathroom by the One Day Bath people....(they said they could do it in 7days lol). I think it is too much, our bathroom is TINY!! We are going to call around for estimates and try to do some of the labor ourselves.

We paid between 8-9 k in our coop. And the coop peeps were so annoying because we did not use their guys or recommendations. Thank god our contractor was so nice.

They definitely need to get other estimates. That is WAY too high. I had 2 full bathrooms (master and guest) remodeled for less than that.
