Preggo with a ? What or How many clothes do I need for the first few weeks???

How many Newborn outfits do I need v.s 0-3 months??

I have heard so many stories where babies can't even fit into the newborn size and barely 0-3 and jump right into 3-6 months.

What would be a good amount of newborn outfits to have and 0-3 months to have??

Also what do you recommend for the first few wks. I have heard some hospitals prefer no onesies, & just t-shirts for the umbilicord care? So do I need any onsies for a newborn then??

DS was born 6lbs 9oz and we used NB clothes for 3-4 weeks. We had to go out and buy a whole bunch bc everyone was telling me we didnt need that much. It all depends on how much DC weighs. You can always return NB's if you dont use them.

DD wore NB for like 2 months. She was born 6 lbs 3 oz. I would get NB and 0-3. Onsies, pants, etc...Keep tags on so you can return if not used.

I think it really depends on the size of the baby. DD is still in newborn clothes, and she will be 4 weeks tomorrow. As far as how many, I actually didn't have a ton because I didn't think she would be in newborn clothes so long. I have 5 outfits that button up the front, and maybe 15 onesies (she wears onesies to sleep in too because its so freaking hot). She spits up on everything, so I end up doing her laundry pretty frequently. Maybe start with a few items, and if she is small, you can always get more.

My hospital said clothes over the umbilical cord were fine...just to keep it dry, so she has been in onesies the whole time.

DS was born in Jan. He was in carters sleep and plays until his umbilical cord fell off, 3 weeks. I didnt put him in onesies bc I didnt want the croch area to pull on the cord, kwim? He was going to be a smaller baby so I got sooo many newborn onesies that he grew out of by 3 weeks. He was 7lbs 4oz. At his 2 week appt he was 9lbs 12oz and in size 0-3.

Loey was 8 lbs, 13 ounces at birth.

we used NB clothes for maybe a week? mostly in the hospital (were there for 5 days). I would have enough for about a week or so.

Not sure where you heard that about 0-3 because Loey was in that for a while even though he was such a big baby! He was in that for at least 2 months! In the hospital, they gave us shirts for the baby to wear... we stuck with that. We did bring a few outfits but ultimately were more comfortable using the shirts they gave us and just keeping him in a diaper + the shirt.

In the first few weeks, I found it SO much easier to just use shirts & diapers over onesies!!!

Wow, I've never heard that!

DD was a peanut. She was born at 6lbs 6ozs and left the hospital at 5lbs 10ozs. She fit into preemie for 3 weeks and I had her in NB for 2 months! As for 0-3, at 5.5 months, she still fits into most of her 0-3 (she is 14.5 lbs give or take and probably 25 inches) and 3-6, no where close to 6-9. At one month, 0-3 was huge on her and she was 8lbs 7ozs.

IMO, definitely buy NB! Sleep and plays, outfits, whatever you would like. I am not a onesie fan unless she wears it with jeans or a skirt, so I don't really buy them on my own. I did use the side snap undershirts, but for us, she was so petite (and still is) that the onesies never touched her umbilical stump.

I would also buy a decent amount of 0-3.

Key here is save receipts and do not take tags off. If you want to wash things before your baby wears them, I would only wash 5 outfits tops and maybe 1 or 2 in 0-3. Then wash as you go. You will do tons of laundry anyway, so IMO you are better being safe than sorry. I am glad I did things like this because what she doesn't wear in a size, I return. I have maybe one thing with tags that she didn't wear that I haven't returned (yet).

I regret that I only bought 3 NB outfits because I had to send my poor exhausted DH out to buy DD a NB wardrobe!

I delivered at Winthrop and they never mentioned anything about a preference...he wore onesies while he was there. Like you, everyone kept telling me not to get NB clothing so all I really had were 0-3. DS was born 7lbs 7oz and was swimming in 0-3 so DH ended up having to go out and buy NB onesies. DS was born in March so during the day he'd wear onesies and at night he'd wear a gown. He wore NB for the first 3-4 weeks, he had about 7 NB onesies, 2 pairs of pants, and 4 gowns.

ETA: I totally agree with this:

I used newborn outfits for about 2 wks. DS was born at 7lbs 10oz.
I never had any problems with the cord and his clothes.
