Pre-TTC counseling?
I was getting my annual today and my Dr. said that before DH and I TTC that we need to come in for a counseling session. It sounded like it just went over family history, etc. But I was just curious if there was anything else to it. I'd never heard of this before...

I don't think so... she just talked about how before we start TTC we need to come in and discuss family history, etc...
Maybe it is genetic counseling? I'm not sure. I was there for my annual and was feeling rather exposed so I didn't think to ask at the time

Hmmm not sure. I mentioned to my dr that we are TTC and she gave me pointers and advice on BDing, my chart, etc. but she never asked about my family history.
Maybe every dr is different?
Did she mean genetic counseling? I think people of the Jewish faith have some sort of genetic testing but I can be wrong.

I think this needs to be done more often!! My cousins have a baby who requires monthly blood transfusions because both of the parents(who are italian) carried a med. anemia trait(Thalassemia). I had to request to have this blood test done to make sure we were in the clear.

Yes they test for Tay Sachs
It is called an Ashkenazi Jewish Panel.
They test for A LOT more than Tay Sachs. I was tested for:
Tay-Sachs disease, Canavan disease, familial dysautonomia, Niemann-Pick (type A) disease, Fanconi anemia (group C), Bloom syndrome, Gaucher disease (the non-neuronopathic type), mucolipidosis type IV, and glycogen storage disease type 1. They also test for cystic fibrosis because it is often included in an Ashkenazi heritage screening panel, since it occurs with the same frequency in European Jews as in members of the non-Jewish Caucasian population (approximately 1/3,000).
All of my tests came back negative so DH did not need to be tested. The testing was not required but stringly suggested. I would have done it anyway. I venture to say that most Jewish couples do.
Many other cultures have predispositions to genetic disorders and diseases as well. I had this panel run before we were married.

i have never heard of this before...it makes sense and i think more doctors should do something like this.
