Pre-Natals-- can you get otc??
I take a multi every day which has a ton of great stuff in it. I also take additional Folic Acid and Paba. I order Flax Seed supplements (which is basically a vegetarian version of Omega 3, 6, 9-- but it was upsetting my stomach so I stopped taking it).
Are pre-natals necessary? And if so-- can I get over the counter, or do I need a prescription?
I need to make an appt with my doc anyway, but I really don't feel like dealing with them calling in a perscription for it-- which they may not do until I have my "pre-conception" appt with her.
Thanks!

you can get them OTC. I've heard good things about Target and the ones they have at Costco

mine are rx, but you can get them OTC pretty much anywhere. I thought about switching to the otc, but I have no side effects with my rx ones, and I have been taking them since March.

Do they help with conception or are they just "good to take"?

They are good to take, they have nothing to do with conception. If you don't want to take prenatals, then just up your folic acid intake. Its good to have it built up in your system to avoid birth defects, particularly neural tube defects.

ok- thanks. I definitely get more than 100% of the daily intake of folic acid with my multi and supplement, so I should be ok. I just have a senstiive stomach-- so the less vitamins I can take, the better since they don't always go down easy.

I took the Target brand while TTC and actually went back to using them when I got pg because the prescription ones made me really sick.

400mcg of folic acid a day is fine if your NOT trying to conceive. It is recomended you take 800mcg-1000mcg of folic acid for at least a month before ttc. This is to prevent neural tube defects which are formed between weeks 4-12 of the fetus! I would see what number your MD recomends. you can probably just call the office and ask HTH

Re: Pre-Natals-- can you get otc??
Thanks for the info... I have been taking 800MG for months.
I am going on vacay in a few days-- will call my doc when I get home to set up my appt anyway.

Re: Pre-Natals-- can you get otc??
FYI- if you want to get the extra Omegas and DHA, there is a supplement to take with OTC prenatals called Expecta. My Dr. recommended taking it with OTC prenatals (but not with the Rx prenatals).

You can get them at Target. They are pretty good not really any side effects at all.

You can get them otc. I saw them at Target yesterday. I'm just taking a woman's multi-vitamin. My rx prenatals made me gag through my entire pregnancy with my daughter so I'm scared to take them again.
