Potty Training Advice - need major help with going #2

We have been potty training my son now for 10 days. After the first 2 days, things were going really well. He wears underwear all day and pees like a champ. He pooped in the potty day #2 and day #4 - it was a challenge but he did it!

We are having MAJOR issues with poop now. He has gone in his underwear now for 5 days straight and I am at a loss. It doesn't even seem to bother him. I only notice by the smell. He knows it is wrong but does it anyway. He tells us everytime he has to pee and is very exited when he pees in the potty but tells us nothing when he has to go #2 or when he goes in his pants.

Any advice about dealing with going Number 2 is greatly apprecaited. He goes back to nursery school today and I know he is going to poop in his underwear there if we dont get this under control. Thanks!

No real advice. We went through it with DS#1 & it took 6 months to get him poop trained. If I pushed the issue, it made him regress

Now I'm training my 2nd DS & same issue

This was us too, except DS1 took nearly a year to poop train.

What I would do is tell your DS that if he is going to go in his underwear you will take it off and he can just go with no undwear or pants. If he isnt ready to poop on hte potty then he can go in a pull up but he has to tell you when he needs it.

This was my peds advice after DS1 got so backed up from holding it. She said to explain to him that he didnt have to use the potty if he wasnt ready, but basically going #2 in his underwear wasnt acceptable. So it would be his choice pull up, diaper or potty.

We did this for about 8 months before DS was ready and then one day he did it on the potty and no looking back. But he only had 1 accident in his underwear. My ped considered DS full trained much earlier than I did bc to me he wasnt trained until it was all in the potty, but she said as long as he was going, and not having accidents, he was trained he was just choosing hte where part.

I wouldnt push the potty issue too much because seriously seeing DS so constipated (we never had that issue with him before potty training) he was in sooo much pain and it took so long to undo the issues he had created in his belly (weeks on miralax!)

DS took 3 months.
I just stuck to it.
We bought a new potty seat for the toilet (versus he potty) & he started going then. It may be coincidence though.

IMO and experience when they are ready it will just happen. Ds is just about 3.5 and literally told me Sunday no more diapers and 123 it was done. Before that he was super anxious and would hold it and if I pushed it things got worse.

Does he need to be potty trained for school?

My ped suggested giving him thugs to keep him regular so it was easy to push out. We did lots of water, pears and some white grape juice.

Should I continue to just keep him in underwear? It has just been 5-6 days in a row of him going #2 in his underwear. I am so nervous to go back to pull ups because he is so good with the pee.

Thanks ladies!

I think it's your preference. My oldest I left in underwear & just dealt with it. My youngest I put back in pull-ups bc the clean up was much easier. He rarely has a pee accident bc I stress no pee in your pants.

DS potty trained very quickly with pee and we had a little bit of a difficult time with poop -- he was really scared of the poop coming out and he'd cry everytime he got up and saw poop -- so we read lots of books about potty training together (everyone poops and the joshua potty book, i can't remember the name) and read them all the time and emphasized that pooping is normal and everyone does it. We invited him to see ours in the potty when we were done (gross, I know -- but it helped him see that it was normal) and after a few days he started telling me when he had to poop and he'd go on the potty (sometimes we would sit there for 30 minutes and we sang, read books, i'd let him bring s speical poopy toy with him) -- we also offered a bigger, more special reward for poopy that made it more enticing. i found the less tense I was, the better he did.

I say, don't give up. try to stick it out since the pee is going well.

Edited for spelling

ITA. We had the same issue with my son. Was so scared to go on the potty, held it, got o backed up was in extreme pain etc. Endless miserable cycle. I think he finally started going 100% in the potty about 4.5. Dont worry about it too much.

Poop took us awhile. What helped is that DS 1 would only poop at home and it was pretty obvious that was what he was about to do (although if you asked him he would say no - we found that out the hard way). As soon as we realized he was going to poop, we'd whisk him off to the potty and give him a small prize for going on the potty. We would sit in there for awhile until he actually would do it but, it worked.
