My friend read this book in which you train them in 3 days. You have to stay home for 3 days (make no plans) its not about putting them on the toilet and waiting, its about having them have accidents and realizing they are wet. They e not to use diapers (the are actually told to have DC throw them out) and they must wear underwear. It worked for her son. He was having some issues with #2 but #1 is not a problem at all.
I dont know the name of the book though. someone on here might
eta: I just asked my friend and she said it was a FWD email. She is sending it to me if anyone would like it let me know.
I want to know the name of the book? thanks!!

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
I was trained before 1 as was my brother. It was a painful process I'm told. Not for me but it was messy and involved a lot of attention to what I was doing.
Times have changed and honestly I don't have the time to watch AJ's every sign. Oddly enough, we DO know when she's about to go.
So my aunt has started trying to Train her. She's going to be 2 this month. She started a week or so ago. As of Monday, she's pee'd once in the "Royal Throne" its a potty chair that makes a royal chine when its pee'd in.
Sure I wish I could train her, but I don't think it will happen. If you can, though, go for it.
Its not like you're suggesting punishment or something drastic for failing to be trained by 1.
Meh, I say go for it. It will either work or it won't. Nothing to lose!

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
thank you everyone.
I guess people only know what they see. my MIL thinks it's ludicrous to have a walking/talking baby in a diaper. some people think it's ludicrous to have an infant potty training.
ftiw, my ped said go for it. there is no harm. my MIL is with him ALL day and is UBER attentive. besides, he is in cloth diapers so he already knows the feeling of pee and poop against his gorgeous little bum. that I think will work in our favor.
I feel like *I* will be the weak link in the chain on weekends, so WHEN she starts (we haven't yet obviously, b/c we don't have a potty. he is almost walking so I want to give him another couple of weeks on that but I don't think I said in my OP that I was starting tomorrow anyway)
eddiesmommy, I am going to check out that seat, plus a few other ones. she did want a seat that sits on the floor for now, so we'll see.
I am of the belief that my MIL is far wiser than I am in certain things, and I always give her the BOTD.
thanks for all of the reading suggestions as well.
if anyone is interested, I can keep you updated when he starts and what it's like. I honestly dont' know how it will go, but there is NO harm AT ALL in trying.
thanks!!!!
and barbara....no, the little prince will need something slightly better than a pail. maybe a pail encrusted with the family jewels (rather than just family jewel spatter )

I've heard they do it much earlier in other countries. Good luck - let us know how it goes!

I would like updates!
Question, what if a child is a late walker and cant walk by the time they are 1? Can they be fully potty trained?

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
Good luck, and yes, please keep us updated. DS is 11 mo and I would love to have him potty trained (maybe it would ease my conscience a little since we had planned to do cloth diapers but it never worked. ) I feel like I'd like to wait till he's walking - but he's close now, so, who knows.
Oh, but to agree with another poster, it sounds like once they are potty trained, things can get even harder to do - my brother found his long car trips from NC much more annoying once my neice was potty trained.

May I ask what the hurry is? I am in no rush for my baby to be potty trained. I am fine with letting him be a baby a little longer. And I'd rather train him when he has a better comprehension of the concept. But good luck to you if that's what you plan to do.

I'd like to know how it goes. And how she does it.
I'm having a hard time figuring out how you potty train someone that can't talk, communicate to you that they have to go.

they can communicate that's the thing...my mom taught me "pee" and "caca" to go and I would tell her when I needed to go, this was at a year... This is what we're doing with DD who is now 18 mos, she's a bit more verbal than a 12 mos old but same concept

so if they cant walk than you just bring them to the potty when they communicate it to you.
I think this is cool. My niece was fully potty trained by 18 months, i think it might've been before. She also talked alot. My sister had taken off a work for a week.

Yup, basically I would tell her pee and she would take me to the potty etc...your sister is smart, it being the summer, I haven't been dilligent at all with DD and need to be...I hope we get a few rainy days that we're home bound and I need to do it

I don't like diapers. I don't equate them with being a baby. I equate them with pooping and peeing in ones pants. older adults wear diapers too. it doesn't indicate age or comprehension or communication. it's a baisc bodily function.
I have no lingering desire for him to sit in his own waste, so the quicker we get this done, the better. also, environmentally it is much more sound. I mean, we use cloth, but we still have to wash it etc. using up water. our "diaper" footprint would also be lessened and I am a big fan of that.
besides, I my MIL is the one who is changing his diaper most of the time since she is with him 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. if this is what she wants to do to make her life easier, more power to her. he is walking his way out of infancy, no matter where he poops.
and for those cautioning me about long drives...that is not an issue I pee at least once an hour anyway. I am the WORST person to go on a long drive with!!!
thanks all!!!

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
Good luck with that. I've read the best age to potty train is between 27 and 32 months. My DD is 22 months and I haven't even bothered to try, I am in no rush. I think unless they have a clear understanding of what it means to go potty and they know what poopie and pee-pee is there is no way you're going to be able to train them. I don't believe a one year old has the capacity to recognize the urge to go to the bathroom and let you know. There is no thought in going to the bathroom at that age, I don't even think they notice half the time that they went. Now maybe there are a few miracle kids out there who can train at age 1 but I personally think 1 is a little young to worry about it but..........to each his own.

I know they train them earlier in other countries, so its definitely possible. It may seem "weird" to some because its not the norm here.
Anyway, I hope to start potty training w/her next summer a little bit before 2....only because I'll be w/her the most then and it's convenient for ME. If it works and fits in someone's lifestyle (and doesn't harm others) why knock it?

I think your MIL might be exagerrating a bit
or maybe not I have never met a kid who was not potty trained by the time they were 1 or 17-18 months in Georgia (that's the country I am from) and for a kid not to be potty trained by the age 2 is almost unheard of. They start with elimination communication and it turns into a potty training, that's how they do it in Italy and many other countries as well. Me and my sister were potty trained by the time we were 13 months old (my brother was 14 months) and my sisters kids were both fully potty trained by the time they were 14 months old. THERE IS NO PRESSURE, NO FORCING THE KIDS. If it happens it happehs, if not it's OK. My DD was almost fully potty trained by by 18 months . Just to clarify : I am not counting nighttime potty training, I am just mean during the day.

This is a side note...can you post what some methods your MIL uses are? Specifically some of the ones that aren't popular here. I would like to get my son potty trained soon and I did a miserable job in training my older one. I am thinking of using commando style but would love some tips.

I think theres a big difference between a lot of the age frames people are throwing out. your saying a year - 17-18 months...thats a big difference....And the difference between the O/P's 9 month old and an 18 month old is like comparing a 10 to 20 yr old person!
A 9 month old, even a 12 month old cannot communicate the urge to pee ...their brain is not developed enough to do so... Nor can they control their elimination muscles yet. That comes at 18-24 months .
Yes, if you wanna put your baby on a potty every hour till they go, of course they'll go in the potty, but I would rather be playing and hugging on my baby then holding them over a potty...and a 12 month + yr old might even hold it to go, its a pavlovian response, not a true understanding.
So I just wonder why people would push a baby to not be a baby? Yes washing cloth diapers uses water, so does flushing the toilet. A baby cant walk to the potty, cant control their muscles needed to use it, cannot understand what they are doing, so its really just for the parents convienence...and thats OK. I really dont care, do what ya gotta do.. I just dont understand it is all .

I think it boils down to each person has a difference understanding of what constitutes a "baby"; I don't think baby = diapers. And I don't think that by pottytraining early you are sacrificing any baby/mommy time together. That's a bit of a leap...
And the reasons that Jess provides are very valid ones, particularly the environmental impact. I hadn't really thought of that, and it really does make you stop and think about the impact each baby in diapers makes on the environment.

Your right, , I didnt mean baby=diapering at all.
I was referring to brain/muscle development. I dont " understand" pushing that. But just like every baby walks at a different time, maybe this is the same. Who knows. I dont wanna argue.
Her reasons are valid b/c they are her reasons, and I don't take that from anyone.
I agree about the diapers actually.I wish I had the patience to cloth diaper and I applaud all who do.....but she uses cloth diapers?

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
I don't understand this whole "understanding" aspect.
we feed babies with a spoon...do they understand what a spoon is? NO. they just know if they open their mouth for it food will enter.
most everything we teach our children is conditioned response. the word "NO" at 9 months Luce associates that with something he shouldn't be doing.
so shall he with potty and pee and caca.
eventually he will "understand" all of the functions of his body.
but I didn't wait to feed him until he understood the grumbling in his tummy meant hunger.
so I will condition him to the potty. I will have him associate the feelings in his tummy and the sensation in his penis to using the potty.
and I may have to take some snuggle time out to do it. but he is learning something. and I am ok with that.
and YES, I do use cloth diapers.
ETA: the ages people are throwing around are TRAINED BY ages, meaning they started sometime BEFORE that age and had success BY that time frame.
so, we are starting at 10 or 11 months (whenever I get the potty that was the ACTUAL reason for this post, but ) and whenever he is trained, he will be trained.
that's all folks.

I love it!! And so many wishes of good luck. ALso don't worry you get all the snuggles when they come off the potty you won't believe how proud they get of them selves. My DS still comes up to me and says "Money I peeped in the potty, give hug, now give kiss"
