Re: Post-partum recovery

i wore the mesh disposable undies from the hospital forever! i dont recall for how long, but i know i wore them when i got home form the hospital for a week maybe. they were the most comfortable - then i switched to granny panties bc you are swollen and uncomfortable and bleeding for a while (i thikn it was about 4 weeks for me).
the bleeding wasnt as bad as i thought it woudl be - day one and two were the worst. then it was like a light period for the rest of the time.

take everything the hospital gives you in terms of healing "down there" and ask for more! LIJ (new hyde park) gives you a perennial bottle, tucks pads, some numbing foam and an ointment. i took it all and got more so i never had to buy any.
i asked for ice packs and a sitz bath - they didnt have a problem giving it to me, but it wasnt offered up until i asked.

i also wore my own clothing - i never bled through anything bc i would go to the bathroom constantly - not always to pee, but bc the tucks, numbing stuff etc was such a relief i wanted to change it often.

something i was not aware of is they monitor your first two urines after delivery. you have this cup thing in the toilet and after you go you had to call the nurse so they could check it. it is fun to call the nurses station saying "i peed!" lol
once you go twice is when they took out my IV and i changed into my own clothing. i packed yoga pants but was too self conscious that the giant pads i was wearing would show like some bulge in my pants so i stuck to wearing baggier pants instead.

Post-partum recovery

If you want to pretty up a bit for your visitors - definitely just stick to dark bottoms. I ruined many pajamas while in the hospital but luckily once I got home recovery was much better. I think I was still feeling the effects of the epidural bc i kept peeing myself LOL not like when you are pregnant and sneeze. . . like I wouldnt even realize what was happening LOL (again only the first 2 days or so).

That was a good article, but it didn’t really address post CS.

Huge underwear is a must. You want something that will sit high enough to avoid rubbing against your incision.

Also, most hospitals I believe provide wee-wee pads (seriously, they look like wee-wee pads for dogs) to line the bed with. They also manipulate them to use them as pads, because….

…No one tells CS girls how much they bleed after the surgery. Most of my girlfriends who have had natural delivery said they didn’t bleed a ton post-partum. I assume that CS girls bleed more because they don’t push anything out. Also, the first day or two afterward I would call the nursing assistant in to help me go to the bathroom and clean up. All pride goes right out the window.

They also don’t mention how swollen you are after surgery. I had the wrong size everything. This time around, I bought XXL everything to fit the spare tire I expect to have after.

Lastly, you get so much air trapped inside your abdomen after surgery so the gas pains are crazy (DH and I would celebrate every fart!!). I had tried the stoole softener trick, but honestly, it made me gassier, so I switch to milk of magnesia and it worked like a charm. It made going to the bathroom so much easier and it only took 1 dose to work. After that first BM, it was smooth sailing from there.

Great points!! They tell us CS girls very little. I had no idea that I would not have a bowl movement for awhile or that gas would be trapped inside due to the surgery. Some hospitals will not release you until that first bowel movement. I would also add to take and wear the abdominal binder that they give you. It really helps in getting the abdomen back in place and it helps to have everything constricted at that point. Try to get an extra binder to take home with you. For those that plan to breastfeed, it takes longer for milk to come in when you have a C-section so be prepared that you might have to supplement and take a few formula samples home with you or have some readily available at home. As for the bleeding, I had a very scary episode about one week after my C-section where I thought I was bleeding to death. It was so scary for both me and my DH. I passed five major blood clots and untold amounts of blood. It turns out that this is normal as your body starts to expel matter left behind which would normally pass with a vaginal delivery. It would have been nice if someone had informed me of this earlier. :SIGH: I think the contractions that came with me breastfeeding and pumping brought the episode on and I'm still bleeding almost four weeks post C-section. Always overnight pads are my best friend ;)

Finally- as everyone says- take home everything they give you- grannie panties, pads, Tucks and especially those baby blankets- they are cool and the best for swaddling.

You might have a tough recovery but for each bad one there are great ones.

So plan for the worst and hope for the best!!!!

ITA, it could be bad but all could go well too Chat Icon Better to be prepared though, I didn't realize how many things I didn't know about postpartum care until I was in it Chat Icon

Re: Post-partum recovery

I was petrified about the recovery! Once the epidural wore off I begged to take as hower that night. They told me to wait until the next morning but I was up and moving fast down the hallway to the nicu every 2.5 hours!

I bled heavy for the first few days but never leaked all over my clothes or had any pain. Yes some people have a hard time, i was VERY fortunate so don't panic! It will be ok!

I had a CS and bleed very little. I think everyone is different and like I siad you have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I bled for weeks but it was mostly spotting and never leaked or anything. I was up walkign around as soon as they let me. never had an issue with goign to the bathroom. Went #2 before I even left the hospital (only stayed 3 days).

I know I had it easy but jsut so the girls know that not every recovery is tough.

You definitely don't need to wear a hospital gown the whole time. I wore comfy Capris and yoga pants that I used while pregnant but they weren't maternity pants, just stretchy elastic waist band. I also wore nursing tanks and a thin zip up hoodie (I get cold in the AC). I also used slip on sneakers.

It's much more comfy to be in your clothes. You're walking around from your room to the nursery passing lots of visitors and hospital employees in the hall, plus walking around your room with your visitors there. I didn't want to be in a hospital gown.

ITA. You will NOT want to be in a hospital gown. I would bring black yoga pants and if you are planning on nursing, nursing tanks and open sweaters.

I was very happy in my hospital gown :)

Didn't mean to scare anyone Chat Icon I actually had a very positive experience with my C-section. It was not nearly as scary as I had imagined. I just wanted to let people know the things that could happen. This FTM had no clue and a heads up would have been nice.

I had a c-section at Southside recently. By large panties, black capris and large maternity like shirts for the hospital. Dark colors for all. You'll also want to take some maternity pads and stock pile for home for your first post period. The period was worse! Also I used a chuck instead of a pad the 18-25 hours after my surgery. They don't put undies on you. They also didn't give me mesh undies.

I am with you. I had a vaginal delivery, no epi, 3rd degree tear. While I was sore, I will be honest, it was not that bad. It's amazing what your body is capable of handling. The human body heals fast. Our bodies were made for this. I took nothing in terms of pain killers. The next day, I honestly felt like I didn't have a baby except for the bleeding and the tender hoo-ha that gave it away.

As for buying stuff...take home as many pads, underwear and bed savers! They will give you the peri bottle to clean the area, along with tucks pads and a healing cream. After that, granny panties and pads will do.

Girls...you bleed! You're not hemmoraging (sp) for 6 weeks, but you do have what is your period for a week and then it tapers off. But pads shift. you might leak. If you don't want to throw it out, don't wear it. Don't wear your finest panties. Don't make the bed with your prettiest sheet set. Don't use the good towels. Chat Icon
