Post-partum hormones

I'm almost 3 months post-partum and I'm still getting the most ridiculous mood swings - actually it's been worse the past 2 weeks. I can go from feeling ecstatic and overjoyed to depressed in a matter of minutes and for no reason at all. It's not even a thought that gets me there - the emotion comes out of nowhere.

I am still BFing and pumping, is that why my hormones are still all over the place?

I didn't BF, but I think it's normal to have fluctuating hormones at 3 months PP. Heck, I'm 11 months PP and I still get them! I feel it happens mostly the week before I get AF. Just keep an eye on it and maybe mention it to your doctor at your next visit if it continues. Our bodies get wacky after childbirth.

Re: Post-partum hormones

God at 3 months I was still cuckoo for cocoa puffs. Just ask DH. Chat Icon Completely irrational and volatile, not "angry" so much as manic one minute deeply bummed out the next. And I wasn't even BFing by that point either! While it sounds typical to me only YOU know what emotional state is within normal range for you, kwim?
But why not call your OB or get an appt to check in, I'm sure they can help!!! You may not even need medication, it could be just things levelling off (You were pregnant for 40 weeks, so it will take TIME for things to settle hormonally!).

And between working FT, pumping and BFing, and still not STTN, you're under a lot of physical stress so it makes sense!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'd call the doc; I'm sure they deal with this all the time and won't even blink an eye. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wait, I can get meds? Chat Icon

Sorry, I don't mean to joke. My moods don't seem to be very extreme, I can easily control them (except for snapping at DH Chat Icon) but I hate the see-saw feeling I get, especially since it coincides with being exhausted and I think it could affect the way I am with my kids. I miss them all day when I'm at work, and then I get home and all I want to do is sit on the couch. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think for everyone, how long it lasts is different...for me, I was like that for about 2-3 months, at 4 months I felt like myself. I would bring it up to your OB, even if they don't suggest meds right away, they will have a history to keep track of, for the future months

Re: Post-partum hormones

At 3 months my moods swing were Chat Icon ! Just ask my DH. They were all over the place. I found out i had a 6cm large cyst on my ovary and had to have most of it removed which included half my ovary.
I still had mood swings a couple months later. They put me on Zoloft and Wellbutrin and i have been swing free and actually feel like i have some patience for once and don't feel so stressed. My hormones just did not seem to want to level out.

Dude I think you're just tired. Honestly you don't even sound hormonal just exhausted, kwim??? And you can't compare your 1st PP days to this time around because you didn't have a TODDLER at that time!!

That toddler energy is a freaking force of nature, we could power a small city on it I swear!!!! Shane knocks me OUT after a day of running around after him! And with a newborn AND work/commuting no wonder you're swinging!!!!

Just take a look at your Mon-Fri evening routine; is there anything you can hand off to DH there that would give you a few minutes to regroup and recharge prior to bedtime for Luca?? It might surprise you how just tiny thing off of your daily "to do" list can have a big impact.
Another obvious thing to look at is your food intake... are you eating nice things (i.e. healthy) or grabbing crap food because it's quick and convenient? You seem very health conscious so I'm betting you're a good eater, but if not even a multivitamin might help get your energy back on track.

And once beautiful Izzie starts sleeping in longer stretches your whole life is gonna change, you know that too!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Post-partum hormones

This is exactly why I did't bf this time. I completely attribute my ppd to bfing. As soon as i stopped my hormones leveled out and i felt normal again. this time, I'm ff and 2 weeks after, I'm feeling so even. so I def think its the bfing.
