Ponds
Does anyone have one in their yard? The house we bought has one and we hardly know how to take care of it!

Re: Ponds
we just built one. not too much experience with maintaining it yet. you can try gardenweb.com, i think they have a pond care forum, people there are really nice & i'm sure they could give you easy instructions.

Re: Ponds
My sister had one of those preformed ones, put fish in it and realized it was too small. So, she built a huge pond and it's gorgeous but there is a lot of maintenance due to the fish.

Re: Ponds
I've heard that Koi are not that easy to take care of because their poop makes the pH acidic. That's what happened to my goldfish (in an aquarium), I was constantly adding chemicals to even out the pH.
You could get some water lilies and grassy plants instead. Does the pond have a waterfall or a filter?

We just bought a house with this also and we are debating getting rid of the pond. Neither of us have any experience with ponds...
I'm curious as to how hard it's going to be to maintain.

Re: Ponds
my mom had one built for my dad years back- my dad was obsessed with it, so he took care of it, but it was a lot of work! He also had someone come in once a year I guess to do some maintenance on it- they sold their house last year and the thing he misses most is the pond and the people that bought the house (who are friends of the family) want to close it because they don't know how to care for it my dad wishes he lived closer so he could do it for him

Re: Ponds
We had a very small one in the house when we moved in. We had a lot of problems with the filter, it was a major pain. Then after finding a dead mouse floating in it, then a dead lizard, we decided we were done with the pond. It was pretty, and nice to have, but not for us.

Re: Ponds
My parents have 2 ponds on their property and they aren't maintenance free, but they don't take too much maintaining, if you have filters in, you have to wash the filters out several time a year but thats easy enough. The filters are biological filters so you don't have to use any chemicals. The plants do a lot of filtering.
Koi are difficult to keep because they eat all your plants and poo a lot. We learned everything from reading forums on the internet, we never had anything dead floating in it! but everyonce in a while Egrets come and eat some of our fish. Some of the Shubunkins in our ponds have been there since 1998, they are so easy to keep, they swim around under the ice in the winter! Also, the Shubunkins are very prolific breeders and every year we have a crop of new fish swimming around!!!
I saw we...its my parents mostly, but when I come home I always head towards the pond first thing to look at the fish!!!

That's funny, cuz I do the same at my mom's house. If you'd like, FM me and I'll send you my sister's email address or viceversa...she's really knowledgable about this. She has koi, shebunken and fantails in her pond. They have bred for the last two years so she has new fish each year. I know she would tell you what you have to do for maintenance. It's mostly feeding and cleaning the filters.
