POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

Hi everyone!

If you lived in a colonial with the kitchen on the 1st floor and all the bedrooms on the 2nd floor, would you prefer to have the washer and dryer:

A) near the kitchen on the 1st floor or

B) on the 2nd floor (so you don't have to trek up and down any stairs)?

Thank you!! Chat Icon

Hi Jessica. I have a Hi-Ranch and I would love if the Washer & Dryer were on the 2nd floor. Did you buy a new house?

Thanks for your input, MetsGirl07!

Hey Jen! How are you? We're in the process of buying one. We close on the sale of our current house next week and will probably close on the new house in Dec. But, the new house pretty much needs to be gutted, so we're trying to figure out where we want everything to be. (We'll be staying with family until it's ready to be moved into.) I'm trying not to stress Too much. Chat Icon

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

I just finished building a colonial that we designed with an architect. We decided to put the laundry room off the garage on the first floor for a couple of reasons.

First being my dh works outside and he is able to come home and leave his dirty clothes in the laundry room without tracking any dirt all over the house. Second is I spend most of my day on the first floor and it is easy for me to switch the laundry easier than having to run upstairs. Third I was afraid that a possible flooding problem on the second floor would be a lot more catastrophic than on the first floor. And lastly the laundry room off the garage has a slop sink that I use all the time, I don't have to bring dirt into my kitchen or trek upstairs. We considered making a laundry shoot, but honestly walking the laundry down one flight of stairs is really not a huge issue at all for us. We actually like folding the laundry on out large kitchen island too.

We also did put plumbing in the walls upstairs in case we ever wanted to put a closet washer/dryer upstairs.

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

didn't vote. but call me silly. i like to fold laundry in front of the boob tube.

so... anywhere in the house and i will bring in front of TV and fold away. i don't mind folding, it's putting away that annoys the crappola out of me!!

I'm good. Well congrats on the selling and buying of a new house. That is great. Don't stress about the gutting. Just think you will have a house that you want....the way you want it. Lots of luck.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

I voted on the first floor. Washer can leak and if that hose detaching from the back you would have a huge flood. I think water should be closest to the bottom to avoid issues.

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

we live in an expanded ranch & our washer and dryer is on the first floor right next to the kitchen, while all the bedrooms are on the 2nd floor

to be honest, it really doesnt bother me that much.... i'd MUCH rather have it on the first floor than say, in the basement

i basically just wait until all the laundry is done and then make 2-3 trips up the stairs at one time

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

Ours is on th second floor off the bedrooms and bathrooms. Best idea ever.

Thanks DH!

I love not schlepping the laundry up and down. And in the am when you are looking for something to wear you just go right to the next room and pick out something from the dryer or basket.

eta: 7 years and not one drop of water has escaped.

I have a ranch but my washer/dryer was in the basement and we are in the processing of turning a mudroom/pantry into a laundry room off the kitchen.

In my old townhouse we had laundry on the 2nd floor and I miss it sooo much. It was so convenient. I hate carrying laundry up and down the stairs.

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

i say 2nd floor where the bedrooms are

our laundry is on the first floor and so is the master bedroom - so for now it's ok with the laundry - but if we ever have any additions to this family i'll be carrying half of the laundry upstairs b/c that is where the other bedrooms are...

if your bedrooms are all upstairs than i say upstairs laundry is great!

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

i grew up with w/d in our basement...now its upstairs with bedrooms...doing laundry is absolutely nothing now.

while my kid is in the bathtub everynight, i sit in the hallway, and fold clothes while we are singing. total multitasking. it only takes a few minutes.

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

Ours is right off the kitchen but we are having work done and plan to move the laundry room upstairs with the bedrooms. We had it this way in my husband's last house and it was the best! Made things so much easier not having to lug everything up and down the stairs. I think that the new washer and dryers are a lot less prone to leaks than they were years ago, although I guess it does still happen. But, your toilet upstairs could also overflow or any number of things could happen to cause a leak, so I wouldn't let that stop you from putting it upstairs.

I don't have a colonial either but, my washer and dryer is upstairs and I LOVE IT!! As soon as you walk up my stairs there are double closet doors that open and the washer and dryer are in there. I love not having to carry my laundry up and down stairs!

I don't know, I like the idea of having it downstairs. So the downstairs is the "work" area and upstairs is just for peace and sleeping (I, the tv junkie, don't have a tv in my bedroom for the same reason)

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

Wow, thank you all SO much for your replies! You are wonderful and have given my DH and I lots of great points to consider! (I'm leaning towards the 2nd floor option at this point - hopefully we can make it flood proof!)

Thank you, thank you!!

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

I think the 2nd floor convenience would be great, but DH wouldn't ever agree to it because he's paranoid about potential leakage and it ruining the ceiling of the floor below. Not sure if that's a valid concern or not, but I guess it's worth thinking about.

Re: POLL: Laundry Location Preference?

I dream of having a washer and dryer upstairs someday! I would be so much better about doing laundry regularly rather than just letting it pile up because I dread carrying it down to the basement and back up again!
