Just as a little FYI, and I don't know the complete story, but this vote is costing the county $2 mil. There were a bunch of people just laid off from the County to save $3 mil.

So whether or not I agree with the proposition, I really resent Mangano for not waiting until November to hold this vote - which isn't even binding.

This. Both dh and I voted no. Dont get me wrong I am an islander fan and would love something like this closer to home, dh is a nassau county employee whose salary is frozen right now along with many many other ppl And we are the lucky ones to still be employed. So instead of spendinf money on this maybe they couldve kept the jobs that were lost. Jmo

A yes vote might mean that my husband and hundreds of his brothers might actually be put back to work. It would be a boon for the labor unions and their families - not to mention the hundreds of other jobs that will be created by the revitalization.

In the end, I've decided to be a "Yes" vote because I think it will cost me more than $58 a year to shlep the family into the City to see Disney on Ice/The Circus/Aerosmith-Lady Gaga-Katy Perry-Billy Joel-Bruce Springsteen-Bon Jovi, etc.

This is where I think they should have downplayed the Islanders connection. Hockey fans are a cult within a cult. Not everyone is a sports fan, and not all sports fans are hockey fans. They should have played up the concerts, the circus, the home improvement shows, etc. And, we're going to be on the hook for $40 extra a year anyway when the place is shuttered.

This is what I was telling my DH the other day. They've focused so much on it being a new home for the Islanders, but the Coliseum offers much more than that to LIers.

And by focusing on the Islanders, I've heard several cases where Nassau-based NY Ranger fans are banding together to go and vote no, so that they're eliminated from NY and there's only one NY team. My cousin went there with his Ranger jersey on and was heckled.

Hockey fans are a cult, but a passionate one.

See as a Rangers fan and looking at this from a fan's POV... I look at it with the opposite perspective.

I WANT the Islanders around because as a Rangers fan I enjoy beating the crap out of them every time we face them.

I enjoy going to the Colleseum and seeing the place filled with 50% Ranger fans.

If the Islanders move that destroys a great rivalry. I can't see how any real SPORTS fan would want them gone.

Now in regards to the financial reasoning behind it, that's a different story and different debate. Chat Icon

I live in Suffolk and therefore haven't followed this too closely but from what I know and have read, I just don't understand why Nassau County gave Wang such a hard time about developing the land!

It's my understanding that he was intending to foot the bill in the beginning, so WHY ON EARTH would they keep shooting down his plans??

That piece of land is SUCH an eyesore and here someone was going to provide jobs, housing and tourism revenue and yet it was shut down.

What gives? Am I missing something? Chat Icon

It's ridiculous. Nassau turned down Wang's offer to build the project privately because it was 'too big'. Honestly it was more likely that the greedy bastich local government didn't feel that they'd get a big enough piece of the pie. So they decide they do want a new, better coliseum and surrounding area but the Nassau residents have to pay for it instead of having it privately financed - that way the local government gets more say. Only.. they don't want to pay. So it's back to square one. I'm just praying they find a spot and ability to build soon and on Long Island.. too many lives could be positively impacted by this type of large scale project for it to keep getting held up with bureaucratic bullshite.

Re: Poll- If you live in Nassau, are you planning to vote tomorrow...

Living in Nassau, the place is an eyesore. I don't want it expended because unless you live/work in the area you really have NO IDEA how congested the area already is. I avoid it at all cost already.

Nassau County is already in the red.

Does anyone think that it will NOT have any impact on our taxes?

And honestly, I could not care less if someone has to pay more $$$ to take the train/care to go to see a show in the City.

I don't even care for Hockey.

So why would I care about expending this project?

Even if you don't use the facility for hockey or any of the other events, it will still impact you.

In 5 years your taxes will now go up more than what it would have by voting yes. After the Islanders leave and there are 50 less events at the coliseum to collect taxes and get revenue for the county, or more likely the whole place is vacant and it's making no money for the county at all.

That loss of money will have to be made up somewhere, and guess where that will be.

Exactly. It isn't just a story about The Islanders and keeping them or letting them go. It's a major revitalization project that included ideas on easing traffic congestion. And it would have created hundreds - if not THOUSANDS of jobs for people. Now - instead of being built up and expanded into something that looks nice - that eyesore has more of a potential to become a lovely abandoned spot - a magnet for graffiti, drugs and other unsavory activity. THAT is an eyesore..

Presented this way, yes it makes sense of course, but to tell me that people want this project because they don't want to go to the City, I just cannot understand.

The area is run down.

And I think it's easier for people who don't live close by to have an opinion and what and what not.

It would be like me saying to expend a project in Suffolk County that would affect people's taxes and traffic. Then try to make them feel guilty about lost job opportunities.

YES YES YES. I dont have the heart to look at the results.

This is an important infrastructure fix. It will bring (and more importantly) KEEP jobs in Nassau caounty, as well as keep a structure that makes money and pays taxes top the county.

I think our taxes would go up something like $38 bucks.

Im all for it to keep and make jobs!

Sophie, the difference is that the structure already exists. I don't live in Nassau but I worked in that area for years and my attorney is right there in the plaza so I am there OFTEN. I also do consulting work nearby. I know the traffic situation. I also know that parts of that area are in DESPERATE need of the attention and re-building this project will bring. Again - it's not a brand new design - it's a revitalization. If you wanted to expand and revitalize a properly zoned area in suffolk - for example Citifield - I'd actually be all for it.

I agree that a lot of people likely didn't really understand that it wasn't about 'keeping the hockey team' on long island. Plus the voter turnout was sooo low.. who knows what might have happened if they actually waited to do the vote in November..

Yes, it WILL need to be worked on. Hempstead area as a whole needs beautification and we need to stop the run down look it has.

"I" personally don't think this is a priority for Nassau right now. Especially since we are already in the red. I understand you need to spend to gain later but I am not sure this is the right project for it.

It think they are other areas that could bring a lot of revenues. Like Old Country road traffic. The dying Source Mall. Etc.. Some area are also starting to look run down and people stopped shopping/going in some area.

WOW, well it looks as if the LIF community is a fair and accurate snapshot of how the people in Nassau County feel.

I read an article that the election got 43% of the "yes" vote. Looking at the results of the survey on here, it's also 43% yes.

I don't live in Nassau so my opinion doesn't matter, but I found this very interesting.

I used to define an optimist as an accordion player with a beeper. Now, I will define it as an octogenarian who voted against future taxes yesterday.

On the plus side, I was able to convince my DW to vote "Yes."
