Re: Pocket hose

The kind that expands when you turn the water on? Consumer Reports actually reviewed them this month, and they had positive things to say about all of the brands. Since they rely on water pressure, they aren't good for low-pressure usage, but as long as the water is turned on all the way, they are apparently pretty good.

Re: Pocket hose

I have been looking into it. My hose is hopelessly kinked and we have to get a new one.

Maybe not... link to amazon reviews

This review just sealed it for me. I will be getting a regular hose.

Exactly, almost all hoses have this warning bc the of the hose material.

Do you really know what the inside of your hose looks like. It's a mold mess. That is why you shouldn't drink out if it. It's wet and then bakes in the sun. Breeding ground for bacteria. Really nothing to do with the hose material.

It absolutely has to do with the hose material. Even moreso than the mold....

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/21/study-finds-garden-hose-water-dangerous_n_1615774.html
A new study released by the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor, M.I., on HealthyStuff.org found that the water from common garden hoses is chock full of toxic materials that could harm the human body.

Lead is found in the brass fixtures at the mouth of gardening hoses and, out of the of 90 garden hoses screened, 33 percent of products contained levels of lead that exceeded those considered safe for children.

Garden hoses are not regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), which monitors the nation's public drinking supply. The study's findings showed that levels of lead in water coming from garden hoses they tested exceeded legal safe levels 100 percent of the time.

But lead wasn't the only dangerous material found in the water. According to the study, the water also contained plastic additives including phthalates —or plasticizers — and bisphenol A (BPA) that were "found to migrate out of the hose material into water contained in the hose."

The Food and Drug Administration defines BPA as an industrial chemical used to make hard, clear plastic. According to the FDA website, the National Institutes of Health is concerned with the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children.

The study found levels of BPA at 20 times higher than those of safe drinking water levels.

The study reported that 100 percent of the garden hoses sampled contained several plasticizers currently banned in children's products. According to Health Stuff, consumption of these hazardous plasticizers can disturb normal hormonal processes and are linked to birth defects, altered levels of reproductive hormones, increased breast cancer risk, and asthma.

We’d answer that question by saying it’s OK to drink from a hose only if it’s labeled safe or if you flush it first.
Otherwise, the water standing inside may contain worrisome amounts of lead and other chemicals that leach from the hose itself. Many hoses are made of polyvinyl chloride, which uses lead as a stabilizer.
We tested 16 new hoses, brands sold at national chains and on the Internet. Four were labeled safe for drinking; six had warning labels. The remaining six weren’t labeled either way.
The four hoses labeled safe for drinking typically contained less lead in their construction than the others. In our tests, those hoses leached minuscule amounts of lead into water that had been standing in the hose for 20 hours or more. We measured concentrations well below 15 parts per billion, the level in drinking water at which the Environmental Protection Agency requires remedial action. In fact, tap water contained as much lead as some samples. (The time the water stands in the hose, water temperature and acidity all affect the amount of lead leaching.) Hoses containing the highest amounts of lead, only two of which carried a "do not drink" label, leached 10 to 100 times allowable lead levels in the first draw of standing water.
However, even extremely low levels of lead may cause health problems. A recent study reported in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that lead levels in the blood even lower than the current definition of toxicity may adversely affect a child’s IQ.

http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/07/sipping-from-the-garden-hose-think-again/
The group tested nearly 200 gardening products, including hoses, gloves, kneeling pads and tools, for lead, cadmium, bromine, chlorine, phthalates and bisphenol A. Over all, they found that two-thirds of the products tested contained levels of one or more chemicals in excess of standards set for other consumer products.

For example, 30 percent of all products tested contained lead exceeding the Consumer Product Safety Commission‘s standard of 100 parts per million for children’s products.

http://www.healthystuff.org/findings.050312.garden.php
2012 Garden Products Study

What did we test?

HealthyStuff.org screened 179 common garden products. Including garden hoses (90); garden gloves (53); kneeling pads (13) and garden tools (23).

What did we find?

Two-thirds (70.4% - 126 of 179) of products tested contained enough chemicals of concern to be ranked “high concern” in our ranking system, which means we detected high levels of one or more chemical hazards.
7.3% (13 products) were medium concern
22.3% (40 products) were low concern
Overall, 30% of all products contained over 100 ppm lead in one or more component. 100 ppm is the Consumer Product Safety Commission Standard (CPSC) for lead in children’s products.
Lead and phthalates were found in water hoses and gloves at levels exceeding Consumer Product Safety Commission standards for other products.
Lead was found in brass fitting for garden hoses at levels exceeding standards for brass in residential water fixtures. Garden hose ARE NOT regulated by the SDWA.
Water samples from a representative hose contained numerous chemical hazards, including lead, phthalates and BPA.
