Playdates - dont'
I know you said you do drop off playdates so you can't use that excuse, but then I would do what another poster suggested and state that you stay for 1st time playdates. Get a feel for the interaction of the 2 kids playing and how the dad watches them.

Maybe suggest a playdate at a neutral location (bowling, etc.) where you will be there?
This is what I was going to say. Or suggest the park or whatever. Just say that you are sorry but you don't allow your kids at people's houses. That's honestly what I would say.

Do it in a neutral location - the park is my 'go to' for large groups or parents I'm not really 100% with ......

You could just play "neurotic mom" and blame yourself if you want to get your point across but not offend his parenting style. Say something Like "I'm happy to drop him off but I am a little neurotic and have some ground rules like xyz for drop offs, I don't want him in the street or out front unsupervised. I understand if this won't work for you, but it's important to me so I tend to not do many drop offs just yet...." you can at least get your main point across that way....
