Placenta encapsulation???

I was reading that Kim kardashian is interested in consuming her placenta after birth, that it can help with PPD, breastmilk supply and with bleeding. They dry it and crush into a powder that they turn into capsules. Of course you can simply eat it raw or cooked (yuck).

I also read that most animals in the wild eat their own placentas.

Ive never even heard of this. Thoughts? Would you do it?

Placenta encapsulation???

I plan on doing this come december. There a quite a few doula's on LI that offer placenta services. I'm having mine encapsulated, a tincture made (lasts forever), and a smoothie.

The effects are phenomenal! Minimize pp bleeding, increase milk supply, increase mood, decrease chance of ppd, gives energy, and more! I'm so excited to try it.

Placenta encapsulation???

My sister tells stories all the time of her patients taking the plancenta's and either making a smoothie out of it or making capsules. I've heard of it helping with PP and other things in the body and I know that animals in the wild eat their own placenta but I just can't bring myself to do it personally.

It is a personal decision that people are either TOTALLY for it or TOTALLY against it. To me a pill would be easier to swallow than drinking a smoothie after seeing it but for me the thought makes me nauseous. Again that's my own personal opinion, I have a weak stomach so I just couldn't handle it.

I can't swing the encapsulation price -- people do it for different reasons but after speaking with a few of the ladies who prepare them using the different methods, we concluded that doing the smoothies was the best option for me. So that's my plan.

According to them -- the people who they've worked with before all say you can't even taste it. They grind it down super smoothe and toss it in a smoothie with a mess load of fruit. It doesn't gross me out and I think the benefits are incredible.

I'll report back after I do it in August!

Re: Placenta encapsulation???

The thought makes me sick. Sorry, just my opinion.

And the drying/cooking process to turn into powder for the pills kills off any so called hormones or enzymes/vitamins anyway.

I'm fine with some painkillers and vitamins after birth, don't need to eat the ORGAN that nourished my infant for 9 months. Ugh.

I don't know why you have to be so judgemental. Some hormones may be killed but definitely not all of them - such as iron, etc. Many people find great benefit to this. Why do you have to be so immature and say "UGH".

No one's forcing you to do it, so no need to be so close minded and judgey.

It's definitely a to each their own thing -- but it's something that's 'the norm' in other parts of the world and, to me, the benefits of doing so are worth it to me.

Honestly even if I was anticipating it being slightly gross -- I'd still think about it. One time shot - boom.

If it means I'll have better luck breastfeeding, recover from the birth better or beat the baby blues -- I'll try it.

same. i delivered at GS and my nurse said they aren't allowed to give the placentas back - idk if thats true or not. She was older and seemed to have a lot of opinions so she mightve just said it bc she didnt believe in it

I'm entitled to my opinion and I'm disgusted by it. I don't think there is any need for human beings to eat the placenta of their offspring. You can get iron and nutrients from other sources.

I'm very much the opposite of immature, believe me. But a question was asked and I answered it. The thought seriously makes me feel ill (not so much the encapsulation but the smoothies or raw eating part). To each their own.

Te encapsulation part is the most expensive. It's 250-350 depending who you use.

It's not like you birth the placenta and they put it on the plate and you start chewing on it Chat Icon

I'll gladly report back how the smoothies thing go and what I feel happens as a result afterwards... As I said, mixed into a smoothie you apparently can't taste it.

would you rather encapsulation? I think I personally would, it seems less...icky?
I didn't even know any of this stuff existed before now.

People actually do basically just that though..sometimes pieces are cut off and the mother swallows it or puts it in her mouth to supposedly help with uterine contraction.

I guess I just don't get it. We as humans have an amazing body where our uterus will contract after delivery, hormones are released on constant basis to stimulate milk production or to combat the blues etc...we have iron supplements available to us as well as every other vitamin out there. Is it really necessary to eat something that has been used as the nutritional AND waste/filtering system for our baby?

Most OB/GYN's will most likely tell their patients that no real value can come of it.

I guess the real thing that bothers me is the marketing ploys behind these things...to turn the placenta into pills, a process is initiated that basically cooks the placenta and the nutrient content would be close to nothing. So women will fork over $300 or more to do this, whereas they'd be better off taking their prenatals.

I was reading a little just out of curiousity and its a dehydration process- not sure if that means it is "cooked" or not

There's a lot of other things I'd gripe about before this as far as marketing ploys. No one sent me anything or suggested I do this. I sought the information and contacts out on my own.

And I won't even bother trying to compare to how restoring the nutrients you lose giving birth naturally might be different than using a vitamin get in a bottle that's been sitting on a shelf. That argument isn't even worth our time.

Are the women out there who HAVE chosen to break apiece off and eat it? Yeah, sure. But no one I contacted even presented that as an option? And that isn't what I'm going to do.

As far as saying someone would be better off taking their prenatals... All I can say is I'm choosing not to knock it till I've tried it. I'm seeing a lot of my close friends all who would absolutely not try this... Seek out other options down the line for things they could do to boost their milk supply, etc.

It's a one shot deal. I'm willing to give it a go. It's not going to hurt anyone.

It's one thing that you're disgusted by it. I get it. It's unusual... And I have no problem with someone saying it sounds gross. But you're kind of making it seem like you have first hand information as to how doing this is a complete waste of time that won't do anything beneficial. So can I ask... Do you know something I don't? Because I've heard tons of first hand accounts from second time moms who noticed lots of positive differences PP compared to their first PP when they didn't do this.

I'm just more inclined to listen to personal first hand accounts than a doctor saying they can't necessarily suggest doing so because (in truth) there ISN'T the research to back anything up? And that just goes along with my own theory that why would the health care industry support doing annnnnnnything natural when they can get you to buy pills. $$$$$$, folks.

Re: Placenta encapsulation???

My issues with it (besides the fact that I can't even stomach the thought) are:

1- How do you know you're getting your own placenta- or placenta at all? Are you going to do DNA tests to make sure?

2- How do you know it won't be simply a placebo effect? You ate the placenta and feel fabulous- but maybe you would have felt fabulous regardless?

JMHO- it's not for me- but people can spend their money and feed their bodies however they want.

because they will come right to your house and prepare it inyour kitchen. You can bring it home from the hospital and have them meet you at your place and watch them do it.

As far as the placebo thing... that can be said for just about anything. If it makes mom feel better... then awesome :D

do you believe every vitamin in a shelf actually helps you? how do you KNOW ? for certain! did you watch them bottle the vitamins? Make them?

Kwim?

Placenta encapsulation???

Not my cup of tea but hey I would never tell someone else not to do it if it was their thing.

My only issue/question is how do you know if it helps. For FTM you have never given birth and don't know how your body will react and for moms that have given birth...each one is different so again you don't know how your body will react.

Again not passing judgement just my thoughts.
