Re: Pierced parents
Still have my belly button ring in... it doesn't look as good as it used to, but it's still there
BUT - since my piercing is not readily visible (nor do I EVER show it anyway) it's a little different in my case.
I don't think I'd remove other piercings if I had them just because I had a child. If it's a part of who you are and you want to keep them in - having a child doesn't change that!

So Im just curious..... did you keep them or ditch them?? I am sorry but one has nothing to do with the other. I will keep ALL of my piercings in as long as I chose, not b/c I am afraid someone will judge me by them, regardless of me having a child or not.
BTW I also have huge tattoos....should I have them lasered b/c it makes me an irresponsible parent?
Sorry to soap box a little, but this type of provincial thinking really p!sses me off.

Re: Pierced parents
I took my piercings out long before becoming preggo...
I have toyed with the idea of getting my nose pierced (just a small stud) and Ill be honest and say Im withdrawn from what people will see me as considering Im a parent...
Im a younger mom (but no teenager by any means) and still like to be very trendy- however dont want others to think of me as a "bad" parent...
Truthfully- Im starting to care less and less...You take one look at me and my son together and you know I rock ;)
Seriously- if I can get over the fear- i might just go do it!
I say leave it in- Sometimes people cant even notice the tongue ring... (I hid mine from my parents for months when I had it done back in the day)

Um, that was a really rude comment for your co-worker to make. What does a tongue ring have to do with being a responsible parent? I'm a mom, and I'm thinking about getting my nose pierced. I must REALLY be irresponisble!

One has nothing to do with another- but seriously I can understand why she might feel that other could be "judging" her!

Re: Pierced parents
Im not pierced but my DH has his tongue pierced. He didn't take it out. Lots of our older friends kept telling him that he needed to take it out because our son would be confused about why he has that. Our son is 4 now and to be honest he really has only seen it a few times and could careless lol. ETA: I have a few tattoos and I would never get them covered up just because I am a mom now. I love tats and still plan to get more. I must be a horrible mom then

Re: Pierced parents
I have many piercings and a few tattoos and I'm about to have my 1st baby. I won't be taking them out until I AM ready to take them out and they in NO way will make me less of a parent and I am insulted that someone would say something like that!

Re: Pierced parents
Very rude. It's on par with telling someone to start wearing characters on your clothing because you're a parent.
The only reason I could see taking a piercing out would be if it was a hanging one or had a chain attached since babies are hair pullers.

Re: Pierced parents
That is outrageous.
I have two piercings and 4 tattoos. (though concealed in the work place)
As a teacher, I am responsible for children on a daily basis. I am a mandated reporter by the state and make it my business to notify the proper people in my agency if I see so much as a paper cut on my students' fingers.
If the adornments I have on my body render me incapable of caring for my own child (G-d willing SOMEday), then I suppose 11 years of loving and educating OTHER people's children were all for nothing.
When should I quit?

Re: Pierced parents
Things like this make me SOOOOO angry. Lets not drink in front of children. Let's call our body parts cartoon names. Lets conform who we are.
And when they go to college they will rebel and go nuts bc they are seeing things for the first time at 18!!!!!!!!!!
Or, lets be up front with our children so that by the age of 18, there is no need to rebel or feel there is a disconnect to them and their parents.
A little off topic, but when I went away to school I saw so many people who took the drinking thing BEYOND the normal, bc their parents we super conservative. Wine was a part of my culture and growing up grampa would make us spritzers. We kids never went nuts (I mean we had fun) with the whole drinking thing bc it wasn't a big deal.
We shield kids too much today. IMHO Taking out a piercing or hiding a tattoo turns into a big secret mommy and daddy hid from us instead of an expression of art.

Re: Pierced parents
how rude and small minded. I put my belly ring back in after my son was born and I have a tatoo and want another. What that has to do w/my parenting skills is this: I am comfortable enough w/my body to express myself and will teach my son to do the same.

ITA on all accounts. I think how people raise their own kids is very personal, and I would never tell someone else what to do but I agree that if you make everything a "secret" or "taboo" then the rebellion factor is all the worse later.
DH & both have tattoos (although he does not have as many as me ) and we were asked the other day what we thought about if our kid comes home & wants a tatoo. We both answered the same thing: They will adhere to the same rules we impose upon ourselves: 1- make sure you can afford it before you buy it 2- have a design (not off the studio's wall) in your head, then if you still want it in 6 months without changing or second guessing the design go for it. 3- make sure the shop is clean & the artist is experienced. Make sure you have seen her/his work on a few different people to check for consistency. 4- make sure you get it on a part of your body that you can take care of properly.
So does this make me a bad parent?

I had piercings and have a tattoo and if my child asks I will tell them, it makes no less a better parent then someone without any. And if they want it done I will take them!

Re: Pierced parents
i took out my belly ring a month before i got preggos but that was b/c i was afraid it would stretch (and i miss it so much), and i also have a tattoo (although it is on my bikini line so no one really sees it) but truthfully who cares if someone is a parent with peircings and tattos, thats their right to get it and does not make them any less of a parent i am prob going to get another one on my lower back after i see how my body ends up after giving birth, maybe something with my sons initials and my DH is thinking of doing the same thing on his ankle

If that's who you are then keep it. I don't think you should change for your children unless it's something you don't want them to do.

Re: Pierced parents
I have holes up and down my ears and a tattoo, ready for another one. I'd LOVE to get my nose pierced, as did my GRANDMOTHER bless her soul...I also used to have fire engine red hair...I will not hide these things from my kids. Give me Joan Jett over Bree Vandecamp as a mom anyday
