I agree, pets should not be in a grocery store b/c there is food there and it's not appropriate.
But what's the problem if you have a small dog in a bag in say, the mall? It's not as though the dog is running around off a leash in the middle of Macy's?
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I don't see the big deal in it.

I was recently in a store in Florida and someone had a small dog in one of those doggy bags, the dog was whinning and barking up a storm. The owner and her daughter just continued shopping like they didn't even hear it. Someone complained to the store manager and they didn't even do anything!

That is ridiculous - the shoppers in the store shouldn't have to deal with that. If the dog was in a bag behaving and not making a sound; I wouldn't have a problem with it though.

I agree, I am a dog lover, I have a small-ish dog- (shih tzu) I see nothing wrong with taking him to the mall-if he is in a bag-I haven't done it, but if I wanted to, what's the big deal? I will have to take him on a plane too- it's the same situation...some people may not like it, but if there is no rule for the planes and no signs on the doors of the store- than he has every right to be there if an owner chooses to bring them

I guess my question is WHY?

WHY do you NEED to bring your dog with you to the mall?

Just because it is small, doesn't mean it HAS to go with you everywhere.

What's to stop me then from putting my 97 pound lab in a big rolling suitcase and pulling him through the mall?

I'm not saying people NEED to bring their dogs to the mall or that a dog HAS to go with you everywhere; but more of the fact that if I saw a dog in the mall and it wasn't bothering anyone, I wouldn't have a fit over it, that's all.

I'm not saying you in particular.

But I definitely know a few people who NEVER leave their house without their dog.

I wouldn't have a fit over it, but I don't understand the reasoning.

I mean, it can't be fun for the dog being shoved in a purse all day.

It's just asking for trouble IMO.

That is disgusting. The produce is all out in the open. Chat Icon There is no place for a dog (or any pet) in a supermarket.

Can't animals stay home by themselves for pete's sake. Do these people bring their pets to work??? Gimme a break.

But here's one better...I once went to the doctor with bronchitis, double ear infection, and a sore throat.

Waiting room was semi-packed...I sat there with my fever feeling like I was going to die.

Lady come in WITH HER DOG ( it was a pet poodle) and sits NEXT TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I screamed out, "Ya gotta be f*ckin kidding me!!!!!" (Fever does that to meChat Icon ). I mean COME ON...a friggin DOCTOR's OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't at the VET!!!

Some people are allergic to dogs. It's really not fair that they have to be near dogs in areas where dogs shouldn't be. Every mall I know of has a restriction on allowing dogs- seeing eye dogs are the only ones allowed inside...

Re: Pets in grocery stores!

I love dogs. Especially little ones that can go with you everywhere! However Chat Icon I DO NOT like to see them in stores! What if it bites someone?? Plus, me personally...I'm REALLY allergic so it just bothers me to no end. Plus, why should my child share the same seat with a dog who sh!ts and licks its privates all day long!Chat Icon and to be near food that other people are going to buy?? BUT, they get away with it so why wouldn't they? JMO

Re: Pets in grocery stores!

I am with you all on this one!! I feel like Lauren when I see a small dog in the store -- usually yapping it's head off. Does that mean I can bring my Lab in with me too?? He doesn't bark nearly as much!!

I think it is wrong and totally self-absorbed of the people who bring their dogs in stores, malls, wherever they are not permitted.

If they ARE permitted -- there should not be any discrimination -- i.e., if a small dog is OK a big dog is OK too. Like outdoor cafes, for example...

If I wasn't allergic, I wouldn't complain if I saw a dog in a grocery store. Having it in the cart where a child would go would bother me though. Since I am allergic, why should I have to suffer? Its bad enough I can't have a dog of my own, but I have to get sick over someone elses? NAH, I don't think soChat Icon

Re: Pets in grocery stores!

When I lived in the city I toted my Yorkie puppy around just b/c it's a totally different lifestyle - when you're out and about walking the dog, you can run into the pharmacy and pick up your perscription, grab milk, go the te bank - whatever - You're walking everywhere .....I ALWAYS brought her bag with me and she was ALWAYS zipped up in thereif I had to go inside - You'd never know I had a dog in that bag........Although, I would go into Saks and see people WALKING their little Paris Hilton looking dogs through the displays of $$$$ designer clothes, I'd go out on Saturday night and people would have their dogs in the BAR ..........ugh !! - Gross !
Living back on LI now, there is NO reason for the dog to go to the mall, the grocery store - whatever. You're going from your home, getting in your car, and driving to your destination - IMO, it's more of a PITA to bring the dog, first of all - and second, unless it's a working dog, it doesn't belong there !! - Some people don't like animals, some are allergic, and for as cute as she is, my dog is still an ANIMAL - how do I know she won't try to bite someone God forbid ??? - NO WAY !!
