Personal question regarding salary and bills

At the end of the month after all your bills are paid, generally how much "spending" money (for gas, groceries, eating out, movies, etc.) are you left over with?

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

I include all those things in my budget- then I have 2 kinds of savings- a set amount goes into long term savings- then I have short term savings that I can adjust based on increases or decreases

as a starting point- I give myself the following for 2 weeks:

spending- nails, tanning, fun- $100- just for myself- DH does his own money
Gas- $100 - I fill my tank every week
Food- $100 for 2 weeks- ( I get breakfast and lunch for free at work- and I rarely cook dinner)

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

we estimated:
gas (we both commute to NYC so $600 towards LIRR, but about $40 per week in gas for both of us so $160 per month)

groceries ($200 every 2 weeks, that's what we average now)

eating out (gotta cut back, right now we are at almost $100 per week, that's gotta stop!!)

movies (we don't go...)

We have $250/week budgeted for anything entertainment-related -- movies, eating out, nails, etc. Though lately, we've been spending less so that's good. Last week I think it was about $175 for the both of us...maybe less!

I swear it was cheaper to live in the city
no train ticket, no car, no gas, no car insurance

yeah the rent is higher- but once you take your rent plus all those things- it's really not so bad!

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

Well, we are living on DH's salary alone this year, so after paying all the bills we have my take home left along with a chunk of his...But I'd say we limit our extra spending to $80 or less for each of us a week.

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

We aren't homeowners yet, but in our prospective budget, it won't be a whole lot. Probably somewhere around $500 after bills and savings, I think.

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

We get $120/week (dh-80 me-40) "spending money". My dh gets more because he travels farther and spends more on gas. He also pays for food on the weekends.

I usually don't spend much per week maybe just on gas or coffee or a mani. In a month I probably spend $150.00 unless it's time for a haircut or new wardrobe thenChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Several hundred dollars I put into my savings per month.

DH makes way more money than i do , so he is able to put away significantly more in our money market.

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

I budget gas and groceries as part of the bills-

Then we have about $400 recreational $$$- which we try not to spend...

This is seperate from our savings...

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

I don't really consider gas and groceries to be spending money, I consider it to be part of our bills. I am not sure exactly how much we have left over, but we have been putting away $200 a month minimum into savings for the last 6 months and when we have extra money in our account we transfer that into savings as well.

It's taken 3 years though since we bought our home until we could really start saving again.

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

the key is not just to save the money in a savings acct, but to invest it so it keeps up with inflation.

There are plenty of banks out there who can set up a brokerage acct with diversified mutual funds that should beat the 4.5-5% you get in the high yield accts.

Re: Personal question regarding salary and bills

DH & I both take $100 a week to use towards "personal" things. We rarely go out to dinner or to the movies, just so we can save that extra cash. Groceries & Gas are put on our CC & paid at the end of the month.

Groceries $75 x 4=$300
gas for me $35 x 4= $140
Gas for dh $15 x 4= $60
Metrocard for dh = $76 a month
Ezpass for DH = $105 (usually a month but depends on DH's work travel)

All our savings money comes out of DH's paycheck. We usually have more then $3500 left at the end of the month

$3,500!!!!! That is amazing. How do you do it? With a house and 2 kids, we can barely save anything.

DH makes considerably more then me & is able to stash away the cash. Right now, we use my salary to pay the bills with the exception of the mortgage & car payments. DH is in sales but not strictly commissions. At the end of a good month, there is always extra money laying around. His paychecks do vary from week to week, but we always know what we can count on. The extra money goes directly into savings.
