People who have run races...I have two unrelated questions...

I'll be running my first 5K (God willing Chat Icon) at the end of the month and I'm pretty clueless so...

1. What do you wear? Typically, I wear long pants and a tank top, but what's the norm? I don't want to look like a dork!

2. Where do you put your "stuff?" We'll be taking the train to the start of the race, so I can't just leave things in the car, KWIM? What about keys, money, etc?

Re: People who have run races...I have two unrelated questions...

1. depending on weather, I just wear shorts and a t-shirt, but people dress however is comfortable for them. I would wear whatever you're used to and comfortable in.

2. I usually leave as much in the car as possible. However, since that's not an option for you, I would invest a pair or running shorts/pants that has one of those little pockets inside the waist band. The pockets are usually big enough to hold money and a few keys. I would not bring my whole key ring...just my car and house keys (or whatever you would need). You can find them at Sports Authority or those kinds of places. I just got a pair super cheap at the Reebok outlet.

Good luck with your race!!

I agree - wear whatever you are comfortable in. You may get warm in pants though. you can always wear shorts underneath and take the pants off and tie them to your waist.

I wear shorts and a tank, but my shorts must cover thighs to prevent chafing.

you won't look like a dork - no matter what - people wear all kinds of outfits.

is this a NYC race (you said train)? if it is, there will be a spot where you can put your bag (if in central park, it will be near benches) you are supposed to put it based on your race number, but it is NOT guarded - so don't bring anything valuable. There are so many bags there, you are more than likely OK. I usually tie my car key to my sneaker. Is anyone going to watch? that's the easiest. then you can give everything to them.

I agree with the other ladies. Wear what you are comfortable running in. I just would never run in anything cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture which can weigh you down and cause chaffing.

As for your keys and cash, I tie the key in my sneaker too, or you can get a little pouch that ties into the top of your sneaker. You can stuff a key and some money into it. They are between $5-10 in any sports store.

Good luck and have fun!!

I have shorts and shirts with little pockets in them for my keys. I like to carry as little as possible. Sometimes, I take the car key and put it in my arm band for my ipod.

I put my key, some singles and my ID in my arm band.

I like to layer or bring clothes with me as an option. There is no standard, just whatever you'll be most comfortable in.

Are you going to have people with you not running the race?

Thanks, ladies!!

One or two people are coming, but they're going to be at the finish line--which is in Manhattan--but the race starts in Brooklyn, so I don't think she's going to be able to hold our stuff. I think I may pick up that sneaker thing...I actually saw someone jogging on the boardwalk today with it! Love an excuse to buy new gear!!

Thanks again! Chat Icon

You can wear whatever you want. People tend to wear pretty much everything...shorts, capris, pants, running tights. As long as you are comfortable go with what you said!

Also I recommend getting one of these for $20, some running stores or sports stores carry them or you can order them online. They are big enough to carry cell phone, keys, id, and a few other things! They are comfortable too and dont bounce! I have one and use it whenever I go more than 3 miles as I hate being without a cell phone on long runs.

Also the race may have a bag check and you can pack a small bag with clothes and whatever. I have used bag checks several times and even put money and keys and everything was ok. The race webpage will say if there is a bag check!

I know a little late, but yesterday, I did the Komen 5K in Central Park with DH and needed to carry his car key, our train/subway cards, credit card, lip balm, a tampon, and our mp3 players and I just used a Vera Bradley wristlet. It worked great and I just held it while I ran. I would like to get a spibelt or the belt like a PP suggested, but for last minute, the wristlet was perfect.
