Pediatrician location ?

How far do you travel to see your pediatrician? Do you think a 20-25 min ride is too far??

I was planning on using my childhood pediactrician for our LO. It is a good practice and they are only 5 min from the house. I keep hearing great things about a pediatrician who is about 20-25 min from the house. I would really love to see this new pediatrician but not sure if the long commute is such a good idea??

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Ours is about 10 min away tops.
I am not one for driving far distances- esp with a baby in the car - so I probably wouldn't travel 25 min
But that's just me

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Our pediatrician is about 15 mins away. When I was pregnant with my first and we went on a hospital tour, I remember the nurse who gave the tour saying the pediatrician you choose should be no more than a 20 minute drive.

Mine is about 15 minutes and I find that kind of annoying. Getting a newborn there was rough and we were there about twice a week for the first month. I saw a LC who is also a ped and considered switching but they are 20-25 minutes away. It didn't seem like much farther but the thought of having to take a sick baby or child that far if the weather was bad was not worth it to me.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Ours is 20-30 minutes away depending on traffic. My thought process was that if there was an emergency we wouldn't go there, we would go to the hospital so the distance wasn't an issue.

This exactly! On a good day ours is about 20min away from where we live now. When we first started using her, she was only 10min away.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Ours was 3 minutes away before we moved. now it is a 15-20 minute ride. If it is an emergency , I would take DS to the ER, not the dr.

I could walk to mine if I absolutely had to. I prefer them to be closer for emergency purposes.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

I travel 20 mins and it's fine. I LOVE the practice and the one that is close is popular but, I want to cry when I hear that wait times. I actually spend less time because I am taken right into a room. I am always out in 30 minutes from start to finish. Well worth it for a dr. you trust and like. I also think that in a true emergency you wouldn't be going there. You would be at the ER.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Ours is 3 minutes. While I didn't pick it for that reason, I do like the idea that if I have a really sick kid to take in (throwing up, etc), it's a really short ride. Plus they can squeeze me in easier since I can come right in.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Mine is 3 minutes away and now that I have the experience of being so close I dont think I could do a 20 minute drive. It is super conveinent. Like sometimes they will say, can you be here in 15 minutes and I can no problem. Walk in hours are 8-845 and I can leave at 830 and still beat the clock on that. I can have a sick child in an out of a visit in under a half hour.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Mine is five minutes away. I know two moms that travel 25+ minutes to their peds because of their reputations. It depends on your comfort level and their hospital affiliation in an emergency. (If something terrible were to happen, you want to make sure they have rights in the hospital you'd go to... otherwise you have no idea who'd be caring for your child).

Our old one was about 20 minutes away. Not too bad, but could be a pain when the kids are sick or you call and they tell you to come right in.

My new pediatrician we switched to 3 years ago is up the block, same town and a 2 minute drive! We lucked out and it is super convenient and really nice to have them so close! Especially if we have to stop by to pick up papers or something or make a quick visit for a sick kid.

Re: Pediatrician location ?

Mine is 5-10 minutes away but if I ever moved I would travel to him regardless. He is an awesome doctor!! If it were an emergency I would take DS to the ER. But it all depends on your comfort level

Re: Pediatrician location ?

My ped is the one I used to see when I was younger. He is closer to my parents house than mine so I travel about 15-20 to get to him from my house. My parents watch him during the school year while I'm at work so i figured having a ped close to them is better than having it close to me
