ped. office - would you be annoyed?
I'm going to preface this by saying I'm in a bad mood anyway, so this really annoyed me. DS's daycare is closed today so I made his well visit appt. for 9:00 AM today. The ped. has a new office so it took me a few minutes to find it, plus a long while to find parking. By the time I got there, it was 9:20 AM. The receptionist said that the ped. can't see me because I'm late and they're completely booked for today. She said next appt. is 3:30 PM Thursday. I told her that I took the day off from work and I'll come back anytime today (I don't even live close to the office) but she said sorry, they're completely booked. I said I'll call back later and left so annoyed, especially since DS is 3 and lately he's "too tired to walk" and I had to carry him like 4-5 blocks to the car. Every step I took got me more annoyed.
Anyway, I'm feeling less annoyed now... but am I overreacting? Would your ped.'s office do the same thing?

Well look at it this way.
If you had a 930 appt and the doctor made you wait for 20 minutes more because the person before you showed up late, wouldn't you be annoyed?
That is the reason for it. It's not fair to the other patients who showed up on time to have to wait because someone before them was late.
I know you said it was a new office and you had to find it and find parking ,but when I am going someplace new that I am not sure of where it is or how the parking will be, I always try to leave way early to allow for it.
I don't think your ped was being unreasonable but I can see why you are frustrated.

Usually if I call and explain that I am going to be late because of: parking, can't find a spot, got lost trying to find the office, etc. they will do the right thing and still see me BUT I have to wait until whomever after me was done being seen since I'm the one who is late and therefore, they shouldn't have to wait KWIM? Which would be fine with me. But normally they don't make you reschedule, at some offices I have been to, unless you are thirty minutes late - with no call. And sometimes, even with a call, thirty minutes or more and there isn't much they can do on a booked day.
Had you called from your bluetooth or hands-free device while you were en route?

I had actually called before 9 to get the new address since I had forgotten the postcard at home. I told her that I may be a few minutes late, but, at that point I didn't really know how late. I would have had no problem waiting, but it wasn't even offered. I'm slowly getting over it though... just turned out to be a very frustrating morning.

Most offices I go to, and back when I worked at a doc's office while in college, would allow you to be seen after whomever was already waiting was seen had you called. That's a little much that you took the time to call and they didn't try to work with you.

I would be annoyed considering you did say you'd be late. Also, if it's a new office and parking is that bad I feel like they should warn you in advance to allow extra time.

You are not wrong to be annoyed!! You told them you were running late so they knew you were definitely still coming. We're not even talking 30 minutes here. And considering I have been left waiting in the waiting room for 45 minutes I would have made a big deal about it. No way would I have left that office. Sorry this happened, you are a nicer person than me.

I think it would depend on how I've been treated at the doctor in the past. For example, if I've waited for an hour in the past but now 20 mins late & you won't see me? I would've flipped.

I would be annoyed. Every single doc I wait for. They triple book patients. Unless this was a magical office where you never wait more Han a few minutes which I doubt. I could see having to wait until a doc was available but IMO they should have squeezed you in at some point today.

I agree. UNLESS they always have zero wait, then I can somewhat understand. My doctor has taken us late with no issues but we always wait a very long time for any appt.

I'm a medical office manager, and while I do know of doctors office that turn you away for being late, I would never turn someone away. I will usually make them wait until there is a gap, usually a lunch gap built into the day for such an occasion. I don't make other patients wait because another was late, though.

I would be pissed! How many times have you sat in a drs office waiting for them for at least 20 mins! And that's if you're lucky.
Next time I went and I wasn't seen within 20 mins I swear I would make a stink about it.

I can see this situation from many different perspectives. At the end of the day, I would still expect the office to see me, even if I had to wait until the end of that doctor's office hours, after all the other patients were seen. For people who are saying its ridiculous/unfair because you did indeed call saying you'd be a few minutes late, 20 minutes is more than a few minutes late in my book.

Our ped office ladies usually are a little fresh to people who are late and tell them they will have to ask the dr if they will see them even though they are late and then they always see them it seems.

Not trying to start something or spark a debate -- I'm genuinely curious -- is 20 minutes really not considered late?!?! I'm a stickler for being on time and was raised in a house where if you weren't 10 minutes early, you were late. Showing up 20 minutes late to a scheduled appointment is undoubtedly late IMO. It's a third of an hour! At a doctor's office, its likely an entire appointment time slot.

I try to be early to ped appointments...
But I couldn't get out of work on time for my last ob appointment.
They cancel your visit if you are 15 minutes late.
I called 3 times on the way there cc fact I was running late, asked if I could still come in & profusely apologized... I was less than 20 minutes late.
Yes, it does back up the schedule & that makes everyone (including Drs) stay late if everything is fully booked.
But... It sounds like the person you spoke to was having a rough day too.

Exactly! And that's probably why they couldn't fit you in because they had already been waiting for you and finally moved on to the next person once you still hadn't shown up. And since it was only for a well check up and not a sick visit it's all the more reason why they shouldn't have to fit you in because of something that wasn't their fault.

I wouldn't be annoyed be 20 mins is late IMO. 5 mins ok but 20 is late. And if it was a new location I would have left super early to allow for all the issues you had.
At my ped you don't wait more than a few mins so it's not like they ever left me waiting forever. They keep everything on time so by me being late I would have messed their entire schedule up.

Was 9am the first time slot? I would be pissed, especially since you called. I would not have left so easily.
DH gets random people shoved into his schedule all the time. Of course he would take the patient that was already scheduled. He often is double booked for the same time slot.
That being said, his clinic starts at 8:00. His first patient is always early.
eta: I have left ped practices where the front desk was not accommodating and/or too difficult to get an appointment. This includes the practice at DH's hospital. We now go to a local practice 5 min from our house. I can always get an appointment. Staff is friendly. I think they have 1 doctor on hand for pop up sick visits/emergencies. Truly love it.

My pediatrician's office has a policy that your appointment can be canceled if you're 15 or 20 minutes late. I make my well visits first thing in the morning, but even with sick visits, I rarely wait more than 5 or 10 minutes in the waiting room.
I would expect them to be a little more accommodating if they moved offices and the parking was scarce. Plus, you did give them a heads up that you were running late.
