paver patio sealing
Has anyone had their patio sealed? Has the company who did your patio recommended it? We had a smaller paver patio but it was never sealed. The sand stayed put too. We redid it with new pavers and larger ones. The guy said we should seal it and fill the spaces in a few months or so with a different kind of sand that solidifies. Some of the sand is already loose in the wider spaces (it's tumbled stone with uneven edges) of course there's an additional cost
Thoughts?

I have never heard of sealing pavers. We were just told that probably about once a year we would have to add more sand to fill in between the pavers. You can get the sand from Lowe's or Home Depot. I know if Lowe's it's outside where they have the pavers in a bucket.

They can add sand that hardens, it is more expensive but worth it, especially if your pavers were not laid on concrete base... it will keep weeds and ants out.
Sealing creates a "wet look" that is the benefit of it.

our paver guy said that you can seal the bricks, and it is supposed to help maintain color, but its really a preference if you want to do it or not. He did say however (and so did the mason supply house) that you should wait at least 6 months to a year before sealing them

I think you're talking about "joint-lock" sand. Our pavers were finished with the joint lock.
I haven't sealed them yet, but I may next spring to accentuate their color.

We were given that option. I was told it would look more "glossy". I said no thanks. Glad I did not do it.

No she is talkng about a glaze they put over them to seal them, seals in the color, protects them from sun fade, etc.

That's my concern. I don't want GLOSSY, just the richness of color they have when wet. I'm hoping they have sealers without any shine, but I haven't started looking into them yet. I have some efflorescence, so I'll be waiting until they're down a year or so.

My mom does her s every season and it looks like its wet--very glossy. I don't care for how it looks to be honest. we like ours dull

Yes I am talking about both. I forgot what he called the type of sand but it was joint lock and it hardens. he said sealing them would keep the wet look. I loved how they look wet but they are new. I dont think they have to be glossy bc I am sure the pavers we saw at the masonry yard were sealed and they were lovely. It is built on a cement base. But already the sand seems to be escaping from the joints, which didn't happen with my old pavers. However my old pavers were all average sized nicolock bricks with smooth edges. These are 4 or 5 different sizes with rough edges. (tumbled?) He said to wait a few months if I wanted to seal it. I had never heard of it before until he said it.
I guess we can get the joint lock stuff and do it ourselves? I could call the company who did the work to come back but don't want to incur any more costs. he was seriously pizzing me off the last day of the work too bc he was overtalking me with every question I asked about maintenance and then he overtalks to tell me about another service for another fee that he never mentioned before.  I guess it's a luxury problem but I'm sick of dealing with home service contractors of any kind.
