Passport renewal questions

We have a trip in May and I just discovered that DH's passport expires in October. I think most countries require that your passport not expire within 6 months (we are going various places in Europe)... So we need to get his passport renewed.

Is there any benefit to doing it at the post office rather than by mail? Is it faster or anything?

His old passport uses his middle initial. On the renewal application (which I will probably mail in) I put his full middle name. That shouldn't matter, right?

Finally, I don't want to wait any longer to book the flights. You don't need your passport number to book flights, do you? (I believe his new passport will have a different passport number... That's what I've been told anyway).

Thanks so much for any help. DH is pretty useless in this department Chat Icon

Re: Passport renewal questions

I did mine by mail. I sent it USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation. Mailed it Friday and it was their by 4 am Monday. I sent it on 1/30 and with overnight shipping had the new one in my hand on Valentine's Day. DH renewed his with me and both took exactly the same amount of time. I did the regular renewal but did pay the extra $14 for over night.

Wow, I'm surprised it took six weeks to come. I figured it would be more like 3-4. Ugh wish we realized we had to do this sooner.

I'm pretty sure you do need the passport number to book international flights. I know whenever I've booked trips out of the country, I used our passport numbers when booking the flights - but maybe it wasn't required to book, but just had to be provided sometime before the flight? I don't recall if providing the number after booking was an option. I would definitely check asap.

6 weeks? No, they say allow for 4-6 weeks. It took exactly like 15 days 1/30-2/14 from date I mailed it until I had the new one in my hands.

Yes, many countries do have this (including Mexico as of recently). I saw a spot about it on the news recently which made me check our passports.

I don't believe so. It should say here in the passport validity section if it did. Like for Mexico it specifically says that they require six months of passport validity upon entry to the country.
