Painting brick fireplace?

We currently have the 60s or 70s brick that goes up the wall fireplace. I know this is a really dated look, and I want to do something to update it.

Has anyone painted the bricks, or have any ideas on updating the brick look? I don't want to paint it and regret it, since there's no going back...

Re: Painting brick fireplace?

We rent, but if we owned I'd paint our brick fireplace white in a second. I hate the brick.

Re: Painting brick fireplace?

I am about to paint mine white next weekend. Get a good primer! My sister just painted a brick wall in her apt and used a Kilz primer and she said it helped with not using as much paint.

We bought our house with a brick wall around the fireplace that had been painted white years ago. It looks good. I like it white; DH would have preferred it natural.

Just be sure you're really committed - when that white paint goes on the brick, it will never, ever come off.

actually thats not ture. you can hire someone to put up this pastic room around the fireplace and they can sand blast the paint off and bring back the natural brick. its a messy job and it isn't cheap, but it can be done Chat Icon

Re: Painting brick fireplace?

I think instead of painting the fireplace you can put a glaze on the brick to update it. This way it still has that natural brick look but updated.

I have a brick fireplace and it is not painted and I am so happy that it is not painted. When looking at houses that was one thing that we looked for because we do not like the look of painted brick.
