Pacifiers - yay or nay?
...and is it safe to say that if we use a pacifier, get the same brand as the bottles, so the nipple shape is the same?

i don't know about nipple shapes and brands, but i have heard to get a pacifier that's one piece - meaning completely molded from one piece of rubber/latex/whatever it's made of. i've heard that the nipple can separate from the plastic mouth part and be a choking hazard.
ETA: i'll be trying not to use a pacifier. if it comes to that, that's fine, but at least in the beginning i want to avoid it to help with breastfeeding.

i say yay-even though yes, you are starting a habit that will have to be broken. for my DD the binky was a lifesaver especially since she was colicky. i could rely on it in public when she was having a screaming fit. now, she is 18 months and only uses it in the car and in the crib. it quiets her in the car when she is crabby and i truly attribute her good sleeping habits to it as well. it definitely comforts her. again, i know in the future we are going to have to wean her but to me it's been totally worth it. i know she won't be going to kindergarten with it so i don't care.
p.s. i bought the NUK brand and she liked them. picked them b.c you can find them in most stores. so like if i was in stop and shop and forgot the binky and was in desperate need, i could buy one anywhere in an emergency. and she wound up preferring the NUK bottle nipple when she was bottle fed-although she was mostly BF.

My friends swear by the ones you get in the hospital. This one is a spin off of the hospital one. It's easier for the baby to breathe  But these don't come with bottles so I guess you can use any bottle after that.

definitely YAY. the paci has been a lifesaver for my son and i will not hesitate to use one again.
shape of the nipple really doesn't matter, or at least it didn't for my son. he didn't discriminate between my breast, the bottle nipple, and the paci.

Goodness yes, for us a least. We will wean DD at around 18 months or when teething is just about done. I didn't want her to get hooked on her thumb (try breaking that habit), and I wanted her to have something to self soothe.
DD didn't really take to it until about 3 months, plenty of time to learn how to latch if you BF.

just so you know not all hospitals give these - my hospital (south nassau) gave out MAM pacifiers.
the ones you are referring to (shown above) are soothies and i LOVE them. they are the only ones DS would take, and they are great for calming him down if he is fussing for apparently no reason.
and they do make soothie nipples too, but i never bought them, so i am not sure which bottles they would fit.

I liked them bc I was so paranoid about SIDS. It is supposed to help reduce the risk bc they continuously suck in air as they suck on the pacifier. The ones from the hospital were good, but don't stay in that well. I found ones made by Avent , they make them per age (0-3, 3-6, etc) they stay in a lot better than most that I have tried so I dont have to get up 50 million times a night to replace a pacifier when she wakes up and realizes she doesnt have it
the pacifier is very soothing to her and helps her fall asleep.

At first I was an absolute Nay sayer...
Then my DD took to it after I reintroduced it to her b/c I saw her starting to stick her thumb in her mouth, and I WOULD NOT allow that to happen.
It is trial and error though, and you have to find the one that they like!
I went through almost every single one, to find out that SHE MUST have the Playtex Binky with the silicone nipple as opposed to the latex (she threw that one across the room)!

I had intended on using it on occasion, but was trying to avoid it for the first few weeks to make sure breastfeeding would take. During those first few weeks, I used it twice when she was 2 weeks. (the soothie one). The first time was in the car for about 30 seconds when I couldn't pick her up to calm her down. It worked instantly and she loved it. Another time during the night when I coudn't get her to sleep at all. She took it instantly and sucked happily for about a minute and fell asleep. Once she hit 4 weeks, I tried using it again, and she hates it. She spits it out and refuses it completely. The only thing she will suck on now is my boob. She used to love to suck on my fingers, not anymore. FH tried to give her a bottle yesterday when she was starving and I was in the middle of making dinner. She refused it, but instantly took my boob when I took her.

I agree with the OP on the type of paci to use ! I had an issue with Eva last week where the back of the paci she was chewing on it and it got stuck  here is a pic of it ! I got rid of it and using the one the above poster posted

I wish I could say nay because it took forever to get my little sister off of it but it's for sure a yay. The comfort is worth it.

mine wouldn't use one at all--which made me very happy because i'm not a fan. i tried and bought all different kinds, but he wanted no part of them.
my hospital gave out mams, not soothers--every hospital is different, as is every baby. you need to do what your baby wants.

These are very similar to the Playtex nurser nipples (clear silicone). DS hated the orthopedic nipples we gave him from the hospital, and wouldn't take them at all. Then I got these nipples (Soothies) and he went to town on them sucking away.
I highly recommend.

We used the Nuby and I tried to give it to DS only when he really wanted it--i took it away completely at 7 months
